Overview

Pelargonium abrotanifolium, known as Southernwood geranium or Southernwood-leaf pelargonium, is an elegant ornamental plant from the Geraniaceae family. This native African geranium comes from the Cape Provinces and Free State of South Africa.

The plant is renowned for its very refined, finely filigree leaves that strongly resemble those of Southernwood (Artemisia abrotanum), hence the scientific and common name. Moreover, it possesses subtle aromatic qualities and beautiful flowers.

Appearance and bloom

Pelargonium abrotanifolium grows as a compact shrub, usually 30-60 cm tall. The leaves are very characteristic: fine and lacy, finely toothed, green with greyish tints, very filigree and elegant in appearance.

When touched, the leaves emit a subtle, pleasant fragrance - a combination of herbal and citrus-like, much more refined than many other pelargoniums.

The flowers appear in loose spikes and are usually pink to purple, sometimes with darker markings on the upper petals. The flowers are elegant but not extravagant - they complement the fine foliage nicely.

Ideal location

Pelargonium abrotanifolium prefers full sun to lightly shaded locations. At least 5-6 hours of direct sunlight daily is ideal for optimal growth and blooming.

Indoors place near a large, sunny window. The plant benefits from fresh air circulation.

Temperature: This African geranium loves warm conditions. Ideal 15-25 degrees Celsius. During winter it can be cooler (10-15 degrees), which actually helps promote blooming.

Soil

Well-drained soil is essential. A mixture of potting soil, sand and perlite (2:1:1) is suitable. This ensures excess water drains quickly.

A neutral to slightly acidic pH (6.0-7.0) is acceptable. The soil can be moderately nutrient-rich, but too much feeding stimulates leaf growth at the expense of flowers.

Watering

Water moderately. Let the soil dry thoroughly between waterings. This African geranium prefers somewhat dry conditions over waterlogged.

During growth period (spring-summer) water when soil feels dry. During rest (autumn-winter) greatly reduce watering.

Ensure good drainage holes in pots and avoid water pooling around the stem base.

Pruning

Pruning helps keep the plant compact and full. In spring, old, long stems can be cut back by about a third. This stimulates branching.

By regularly pinching the tips of growing stems (pinching) you stimulate more side flowers.

Remove faded flowers to extend the flowering period.

Maintenance calendar

January-February: Minimal feeding, careful watering. March-April: Begin bloom preparation. Water regularly, feed every two weeks. May-September: Blooming period. Water moderately, feed every two weeks. Prune regularly. October-November: Blooming continues. Gradually reduce water. December: Rest. Minimal feeding and watering.

Winter hardiness

Pelargonium abrotanifolium is not winter hardy. In temperate climates it must overwinter indoors. A cool (10-15 degrees Celsius), well-lit location is ideal.

From May to October it can be outdoors in a sheltered position. Bring it inside when night temperatures drop below 10 degrees.

Companion plants

The Southernwood geranium combines beautifully with other South African plants and aromatic herbs:

  • Other pelargonium species
  • Lavender
  • Rosemary
  • Eremophila (native Australian shrubs)
  • Streptocarpus (African Violets family)

Closing

Pelargonium abrotanifolium is a refined, elegant plant with a combination of beautiful foliage and charming flowers. The fine, lacy leaf and subtle fragrance make it particularly interesting for the plant collector. With good drainage, full sun, and regular pruning, this is a reproducible and rewarding plant.
