Overview
Malcolmia flexuosa, also known as flexible Malcolmia, is an elegant biennial plant from the Balkans and Syrian mountain regions. This charming plant grows to about 30-40 centimeters and produces beautiful pink to purple flowers in spikes that bloom from April to June. It is a perfect choice for dry, sunny locations, Mediterranean gardens and landscape plantings in small areas.
Appearance and bloom
The plant forms compact, upright growth with fine, delicate gray-green foliage that remains persistent. The flowers are small, about 1 centimeter in diameter, and arranged in dense flower spikes that can be pink, purple or sometimes white. They appear in April and May and bloom gently into June. After blooming, narrow seed pods develop that contain seeds. The entire plant has a bird-like appearance that is unique among flowering plants.
Ideal location
This plant loves full sun and open areas with minimal shade. It grows best in dry to moderately dry spots with well-draining soil. Plant it at seaside, on rock banks, in Mediterranean gardens or dry margins. The plant tolerates wind well and is resistant to salt spray, making it ideal for coastal gardens. Avoid areas with permanent waterlogging or very low zones.
Soil
The soil must be well-draining, preferably sandy or stony soil. Poor, lightweight soil is tolerated. Add sand or gravel if your soil is too heavy. It tolerates weak nutrition well; rich compost can lead to excessive growth and less flowering. A pH level between 6.0 and 8.0 is acceptable. Unlike many flowering plants, flexible Malcolmia feels much better in poor soils as it keeps the plant more compact.
Watering
Water very sparingly. After establishment, the plant tolerates drought well. During the flowering period, water regularly but only if the top soil layer has dried out. Too much water causes rot and reduces flower blooming. In wet winters, rain cover can prevent the plant from rotting. Drip irrigation or watering cans are better than regular spraying. Once the plant has set seed, watering can be reduced.
Pruning
Pruning is not essential for flexible Malcolmia. Regularly remove dead or damaged leaves for health. After blooming, the flower spikes can be removed to limit further seed formation or they can be left for self-seeding. The plant does not regrow well when cut back hard. Gently remove wilted or damaged plant parts. A light pruning after blooming can promote compactness, but is not required.
Maintenance calendar
January-March: Plant or sow seed. April-May: Follow flowering, remove spent flowers. June: Collect seed or allow to self-seed. July-September: Minimal maintenance, prevent waterlogging. October-December: Prepare for winter, remove old plant and leave new seed.
Winter hardiness
Malcolmia flexuosa is not fully hardy outside its native range. In Northwest Europe it behaves as a true annual to biennial, meaning it is sown in autumn, overwinters as a small plant and flowers in spring. In mild areas, some specimens can overwinter. In colder regions, it is better to treat it as an annual by sowing in April. The plant self-seeds easily if seed is allowed to ripen.
Companion plants
Grows naturally with other Mediterranean plants in dry sunny spots. Combine in gardens with lavender species, santolina, salvias and other drought-tolerant plants. Small height makes it suitable for front rows in borders. Good with yellow or orange flowers such as fleabane or gazania. Plant in groups of 5-7 specimens for better visual effect. Avoid wet soils and moisture-loving companions.

Flexible Malcolmia adds delicate pink tones to Mediterranean gardens and loves dry, sunny spots where many other plants fail. It is easy to grow from seed and offers long flowering.
