Overview
Limonium humile, also known as lax-flowered sea-lavender, is a charming perennial from Western and Northwestern Europe. This compact-growing plant produces delicate, fine flower spikes in lavender-like shades.
Appearance & bloom
Limonium humile reaches 12 to 18 inches in height and forms compact, bushy clumps. The plant has narrow, grey-green foliage forming rosettes. Above grow very fine, branched flower stems covered with numerous small purple-blue flowers. The flowering period runs from July to October.
Ideal location
Place Limonium humile in full sun for optimal growth and flowering. The plant tolerates full sun very well and flowers abundantly in sunny locations. Shade leads to thinner growth and fewer flowers. Protection from strong winds is beneficial.
Soil
This plant grows best in well-draining, sandy soil. It tolerates salt in the soil and is highly suitable for coastal garden applications. Add sand to heavy clay soils. The ideal pH is between 7.0 and 7.5 (neutral to slightly alkaline).
Watering
Once established, Limonium humile is very drought tolerant and requires minimal water. Water only during very dry periods. Excessive moisture can lead to root rot. Young plants should receive more regular watering until well established.
Pruning
Remove spent flowers to encourage more blooms. After flowering, entire plant material above ground can be removed in fall or early spring. This promotes healthy growth in the next season.
Maintenance calendar
Spring: Thin out and remove dead leaves. Summer: Monitor regularly for water needs. Fall: Clear dead material. Winter: Minimal maintenance, protection may be needed in severe winters.
Winter hardiness
Limonium humile is fairly winter hardy and can survive to USDA zone 6 (-4 to 10 F). In colder climates, protection with mulch is recommended. In mild conditions it may remain semi-evergreen.
Companion plants
Pair Limonium humile with other coastal garden plants such as sea pink, santolina, or verbascum. Group multiple plants for dramatic effect. Low-growing succulents work beautifully in front.
Closing
Limonium humile is a reliable, low-maintenance plant that provides years of enjoyment. Ideal for cut flowers and dried flowers. Perfect for cottage gardens and coastal landscapes. Find more inspiration at gardenworld.app/en.
