Overview

The Canary Island geranium or Madeira geranium (Geranium palmatum) is a special plant from Madeira and the Canary Islands. This herbaceous plant is known for its large, hand-shaped divided leaves and its elegant lilac to rose flowers. Although tropical in origin, it can still grow outdoors in milder climates, especially in sheltered warm spots.

This little plant brings a subtropical feeling to the front garden without being entirely exotic.

Appearance and bloom

Geranium palmatum grows into a sturdy plant of 60-120 centimeters tall, with much space taken up by the large foliage. The leaves are very characteristic: hand-shaped divided with 5-7 deep lobes, beautifully green.

The flowers are fairly small, lilac to rose with darker veins, and grow in loose clusters above the foliage. The blooming period runs from May to October, with peaks in spring and early summer. The overall appearance is quite elegant.

Ideal location

This plant thrives best in a spot with plenty of light, but not in direct summer sun in hot areas. A spot with morning and forenoon sun is perfect. The plant appreciates shelter from strong midday wind.

In the Netherlands and Belgium it's best planted against a warm south wall, preferably with windbreak shelter. France and Southern Germany offer more favorable conditions.

Soil

Geranium palmatum grows in reasonably fertile, well-drained soil. Moderately heavy soils can be improved with compost. The ideal pH is around neutral to slightly acidic (6.0-7.0).

In pot culture use good potting soil mixed with extra perlite for better drainage. The plant responds well to mulching during the growing season.

Watering

During the growing period (March to October) water regularly so the soil stays moist but not waterlogged. In warm periods check daily whether watering is needed.

In winter, when the plant loses foliage, reduce water greatly: only water in very dry conditions. Once new growth begins in spring, resume normal watering.

Pruning

Pruning is not really necessary. Simply remove old or damaged leaves. In spring you can remove last year's dead plant parts.

To maintain a more compact form, you can lightly cut back long stems, but this is optional.

Maintenance calendar

Spring (March-May): Growth and blooming. Feed with balanced fertilizer. Check moisture balance.

Summer (June-August): Water regularly. Deadhead faded flowers for continued blooming. Protect from extreme heat.

Autumn (September-October): Gradually reduce watering. Plant prepares for dormancy.

Winter (November-February): Plant is largely dormant. Minimal water. Protect from frost.

Winter hardiness

Geranium palmatum is not hardy in the North. It can tolerate light frosts down to -2, -3 degrees, but severe frost is fatal. In the Netherlands, Belgium and Northern Germany the plant must be protected.

Options: Overwintering in a light, frost-free greenhouse or conservatory, or heavy winter protection outdoors (winter fleece, straw mulch). In milder coastal climates it can stay outside. France and Southern Germany are much more favorable.

Companion plants

Nice planting partners are:

  • Dahlias: Equal blooming time, complementary colors
  • Penstemon: Red flowers, equal growth preference
  • Salvia: Blue or purple flowers, elegant combination
  • Fuchsia: Hanging flowers, equal preference for shelter

Combine this plant with other soft-toned flowering plants in a summer theme.

Conclusion

Geranium palmatum is for those who like something exotic yet possible in temperate climates. With good shelter and frost protection it can give beautiful years. Start with a well-grown plant from a reliable nursery.
