Overview

Erucastrum nasturtiifolium, commonly called watercress-leaf rocket, is an elegant Mediterranean herb from the rocket family (Brassicaceae). This plant reaches 30-60 cm height and bears characteristic watercress-like leaves. Yellow flowers bloom May through September. The plant grows as a biennial or short-lived perennial. An excellent choice for Mediterranean gardens and terraces.

Appearance and bloom

Leaves are distinctively watercress-like: pinnately lobed, lance-shaped segments. The plant reaches 40-60 cm height. Yellow flowers appear in loose, branched clusters. Individual flowers are four-petalled, small, soft yellow. Bloom period May to September. Seed pods are long and narrow, typical of the Erucastrum genus.

Ideal location

Full sun is preferred. Position in at least four hours direct sunlight daily. The plant tolerates light shade from afternoon sun or tall neighboring plants. In shaded gardens, growth is reduced and flowering less generous. Warm, sheltered positions are ideal. Windy exposure is well tolerated.

Soil

Well-draining, less nutrient-rich soils are preferred. Sand-gravel soils work best. pH between 6.5 and 8.0 (ideally neutral to slightly alkaline). Avoid heavy clays without amendment. Moisture-rich but not waterlogged soil is acceptable. This plant tolerates chalky soil well.

Watering

Once established, water requirements are minimal. Drought-tolerant plant. Young seedlings and young plants benefit from light watering during dry years. Mature plants survive without supplemental water. Water at the base, never over foliage.

Pruning

Removing withered flower remains extends the bloom period. Pinching young growth promotes bushy growth. After seed ripens (September-October), the plant can be removed or overwintered as a second-year plant.

Maintenance calendar

May: Sow directly or transplant seedlings. June-August: Monitor growth and flowering. August: Allow seed to mature. September-October: Harvest seed. October-April (winter): Rest as biennial, or remove and resow next season.

Winter hardiness

Moderately frost-hardy. Biennial forms can survive to -10 degrees. In very cold winters (regularly below -10 degrees), this usually grows as an annual. Young rosette plants can overwinter under good drainage. Seed or young plants under glass offer security.

Companion plants

Combine with other Mediterranean herbs: oregano, thyme, sage. Grassy underplanting suits perfectly. Sunny rock gardens with lavender create natural Mediterranean atmosphere.

Closing remarks

Watercress-leaf rocket brings Mediterranean elegance and practical use to northern gardens. This adaptive plant grows well in warm, dry corners. Seed is available from seed merchants; sow in May for summer bloom. Let this rocket display its delicate leaves and yellow flowers in full glory.
