Overview

Clematis dioica, also known as Cabellos de Angel (Angel Hair), is a wonderfully elegant tropical climbing plant native to Mexico through tropical America. This graceful climber is characterized by its extremely fine, hair-like tendrils that climb very delicately over walls, screens, and pergolas. The plant produces white, fragrant flowers that are particularly popular with hummingbirds. Although originally tropical, this plant can be successfully grown in sheltered southern areas of the Netherlands, or in container culture under glass.

Appearance & Bloom

Clematis dioica is a fast-growing vine that climbs through extremely thin, hair-like tendrils. In its natural habitat it can climb many meters, although in container culture 2-3 meters can be achieved. The leaves are compound, fine and lovely, contributing to the plant appearing as an airy green cloud. The flowers are small, approximately 1.5-2 centimeters, white-colored with visible stamens, and appear preferentially in summer months. They have a soft, pleasant fragrance that is particularly noticeable in the evening.

Ideal Location

Clematis dioica prefers a very warm, sunny location with at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily. In the Netherlands, this tropical climber must be grown during most of the year in a sheltered, south-facing cold frame, or in a warm greenhouse. In very mild years, young, well-established plants can grow outdoors in summer in very sheltered, south-facing locations. The plant cannot tolerate temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius.

Soil

Clematis dioica grows best in a nutrient-rich, well-draining potting soil based on coconut fiber or peat, with approximately 20% perlite or sand added. A pH of approximately 6.5-7.5 is ideal. Regular feeding during the growing season is beneficial. Repotting each spring in slightly larger pots helps growth.

Watering

Clematis dioica must be kept regularly moist during the growing season (April-October), but not waterlogged. In winter, reduce watering significantly. The plant appreciates regular misting to maintain humidity at 60-70%. Preferably use rainwater or distilled water.

Pruning

The plant can be gently pruned in early spring (March) to determine shape and remove dead branches. Because it produces flowers on new wood, moderate pruning actually encourages more blooming. Remove the oldest, most woody tendrils every 2-3 years to rejuvenate the plant.

Maintenance Calendar

January-February: Minimal care; check temperature. March-April: Pruning possible; gradually increase temperature; water more. May-August: Full growth and bloom; feed regularly. September-October: Bloom decreases; reduce water. November-December: Rest period; gradually lower temperature.

Winter Hardiness

Clematis dioica is absolutely not winter hardy in the Netherlands. The plant dies when temperatures drop below 10 degrees Celsius. In southern Netherlands, very sheltered, southern locations with extra protection (thick mulch, covering) might possibly allow survivors from previous years, but this is uncertain. Treat as greenhouse culture.

Companion Plants

In tropical greenhouse collections, Clematis dioica can combine beautifully with other graceful vines such as Passiflora (passion flower) and smaller foliage plants. Never plant directly together due to competition; give each plant its own support system.

Closing

Clematis dioica is an exotic, elegant climbing plant that adds pure natural beauty with its hair-like tendrils and white flowers. For Dutch gardeners with greenhouse space or very sheltered southern locations, this tropical vine offers a wonderful opportunity to add a unique botanical addition. With attention to warmth and humidity, it will reward many years of graceful growth.
