Aquilegia flabellata, commonly known as Fan Columbine or Japanese Columbine, is a beautiful alpine plant native to the mountainous regions of Japan, Korea, Siberia, and Manchuria. This elegant plant is celebrated for its distinctive fan-shaped flowers featuring deep blue to purple outer sepals and white to pink inner petals. The combination of colours and the delicate flower form makes this columbine an absolute must-have for both alpine plant enthusiasts and traditional gardeners.

Fan Columbine typically reaches heights of thirty to sixty centimetres and forms elegant, airy plants with finely divided, fern-like foliage that is attractive from spring onwards. Flowers appear in May and June in rich colours: typically blue or purple outer sepals with white inner petals, though varieties with fully blue or pink flowers also exist. The flowers are approximately four to five centimetres across and hang gracefully on slender stems above the foliage.

For optimal growth, position Aquilegia flabellata in a location receiving full sun to light shade. The plant thrives best with at least four to five hours of direct sunlight daily. In very hot, dry regions, some afternoon shade can be beneficial, especially during warm summers. An east-facing position, where it receives morning sun but is shaded against afternoon and evening sun, works excellently. Ensure the plant receives good air circulation, which prevents fungal diseases.

Soil is crucial for success with this plant. Fan Columbine thrives best in loose, well-draining soil rich in organic matter. A pH between neutral and slightly acidic (6.5-7.5) is ideal. The plant loves fertile soil, so work in humus or compost before planting. In clay soils, add sand and organic matter to improve drainage. Avoid heavy, waterlogged soils, which cause root rot.

Watering must be regular, especially during the growing season and flowering period. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. During dry periods you should water more frequently. Once established, mature plants can be reasonably drought-tolerant, though regular watering enhances blooming. In winter less water is needed.

Fertiliser supports bloom and healthy growth. Apply a general fertiliser in early spring as plants begin growing. A lightly balanced fertiliser works well. Avoid excess nitrogen, which encourages leafy growth at the expense of flowers. Organic fertilisers such as bone meal or fish emulsion are also effective.

Pruning helps keep the plant healthy and promotes flowering. Remove spent flowers (deadheading) regularly during the blooming season to encourage new flower formation and keep the plant tidy. After flowering, you can cut stems back to ground level to make room for new foliage. In autumn, remove all dead foliage as a cleaning period.

An annual maintenance schedule helps you manage this plant successfully. March: sow seeds indoors if you wish to propagate. April to May: check plant growth; apply fertiliser. May and June: enjoy blooming; deadhead regularly. July to September: keep well-watered during hot periods. October to February: dormancy and preparation for next season. Each spring you can divide the plant if it becomes too large.

Aquilegia flabellata is exceptionally winter-hardy, tolerating temperatures down to minus twenty-five degrees Celsius or lower. This makes it an ideal plant for northern European gardens. The plant survives winter without protection in most climates of the UK, Netherlands, Germany, and Scandinavia.

Companion plants that combine beautifully with Fan Columbine include other alpine plants and low-growing perennials such as Dicentra, Heuchera, Helleborus, and dwarf Peonies. These share similar preferences for fertile, well-draining soil and light shade.

In the UK and Europe you can purchase Aquilegia flabellata from plant nurseries specialising in alpine plants and perennials. You'll also find them through online retailers. The plant grows quickly from seed, so you can also order seeds from seed companies specialising in alpine plants. Sow seed in autumn or early spring for best results. Select healthy, vigorous plants with well-developed root systems. On gardenworld.app you'll find more ideas for creating beautiful alpine gardens with elegant plants such as this columbine.
