Anthurium andraeanum, commonly known as Flamingo-Lily or Flamingo-Flower, is one of the most popular and striking tropical houseplants worldwide. Native to the rainforests of Colombia and Ecuador, this plant is renowned for its spectacular heart-shaped spadix flowers that come in vibrant colours: bright red, pink, white, and sometimes even bicoloured varieties. The plant combines elegance with an impressive flowering duration, making it a favourite among both beginner and experienced plant collectors.
The Flamingo-Lily typically reaches sixty to ninety centimetres in height as a houseplant specimen, though larger examples can grow to one and a half metres. The plant features large, heart-shaped leaves that are glossy dark green, making the brilliant flowers stand out even more. What many people don't realise is that the actual flowers are very tiny and located on the yellow rod-like structure (the spadix) in the centre of the red "flower". This red leaf-like structure is actually a spathe, a specialised modified leaf. The true tiny flowers cluster densely against this central spike.
Position this plant where it receives bright indirect sunlight. Anthurium andraeanum does not thrive in completely shaded conditions and will stop flowering if light is insufficient. However, avoid placing the plant in direct sunlight, especially behind a hot window, which can scorch the foliage. An east or west-facing window receiving indirect morning or evening light is ideal. In offices or living rooms, artificial light such as LED grow-lights also works well if you lack natural light.
Soil is important for healthy growth. This plant does not naturally grow in standard potting compost but on tree bark in rainforests. The best approach is to use an airy mixture comprising approximately fifty percent orchid bark, thirty percent potting compost, and twenty percent perlite. This prevents waterlogging and ensures good root aeration. Always ensure your pot has drainage holes.
Watering must be done carefully. Allow the top two to three centimetres of soil to dry between waterings. The plant indicates when water is needed by displaying slightly drooping leaves. During the growing season this might mean watering once weekly; in winter less frequently. Prefer lukewarm water and water beneath the foliage, as wet leaves are susceptible to bacterial spotting. If possible, use rainwater or distilled water rather than tap water containing chemicals.
Air humidity is essential for this plant. Anthurium andraeanum loves high humidity, ideally seventy to eighty percent. In dry homes you will need to mist regularly or place the plant on a humidity tray with water and pebbles. You can also use a humidifier. Low humidity leads to brown leaf edges and reduced flowering.
Feeding is important for continued blooming. Use a low-concentration, well-balanced fertiliser. Feed fortnightly during the growing season (April to October) and monthly in winter. Excess nitrogen will encourage leaf growth at the expense of flowers, so ensure you also provide phosphorus and potassium.
Pruning is generally unnecessary, but you can remove old flowering stems just below the flower to keep the plant neat and encourage new blooming. Also remove yellow or damaged leaves.
An annual maintenance schedule helps you manage this plant successfully. April through October: growing season with regular watering and feeding. November through March: dormancy with reduced water and feeding. June through September: possible peak flowering period. Annually in spring: repot in fresh substrate.
Anthurium andraeanum thrives best between eighteen and twenty-four degrees Celsius. Keep the plant away from cold draughts and sudden temperature changes, which can cause leaf drop and flowering cessation. Avoid placement near heating elements or air conditioners.
Companion plants that combine well with Flamingo-Lily are other tropical rainforest plants such as Monstera, Philodendron, and Spathiphyllum. These share similar requirements for warmth, humidity, and indirect light.
In the UK and Europe you can purchase Anthurium andraeanum from virtually every plant shop, florist, and many garden centres. The plant has become very common and is relatively affordable. Select a healthy specimen with many unopened buds for extended flowering. On gardenworld.app you'll find more ideas for tropical interior plant combinations and styling tips. You can also order seeds from online seed merchants, though seed-grown plants may take two to three years before flowering. Position your Flamingo-Lily in warmth and humidity and it will reward you with years of spectacular red blooms!
