Overview
Cardamine kitaibelii, better known by its German name Kitaibels Zahnwurz (Kitaibel's tooth-root), is an ephemeral yet charming alpine flower from the Alps and Apennines. This cream-white blooming plant grows in its natural habitat on rocky mountain slopes and alpine meadows between 800 to 2000 meters elevation. With rapid growth and preference for well-drained mountain soils, it's ideal for alpine gardens and rock gardens. The plant offers a fleeting spring beauty.
Appearance and bloom
Cardamine kitaibelii reaches heights of approximately 15 to 40 cm. The leaves are compound, lyre-shaped, and form an elegant basal rosette. The flowers are white to very pale pink and four-petaled, characteristic of the Brassicaceae family. The blooming period runs from April to May, when the plant presents itself fully. The flowers attract numerous insects.
Ideal location
This plant grows best in full sun to partial shade. A location with at least four to six hours of direct sunshine daily is ideal. In warmer climates, some afternoon shade may help. On north to northwest-facing mountain slopes, the plant can also thrive.
Soil
Cardamine kitaibelii requires well-drained, gritty to stony mountain soil. Heavy clay is unsuitable. The plant grows on somewhat more nutrient-rich soil than many alpine plants. A mixture of gravel, sand, and compost is ideal.
Watering
Once established, this plant has moderate moisture needs. During growth period (spring), water regularly but never waterlogged. Summer: water during dry weather. Autumn and winter: much less water. The plant tolerates some drought once established.
Pruning
Minimal pruning. Remove faded flowers and aged flower stems after blooming. Leave foliage intact until it naturally dies.
Maintenance calendar
Autumn-winter: the plant is dormant. Spring (March-April): new growth and blooming appear quickly. May-June: remove flowers and prevent seed formation. Summer: less maintenance. Autumn: prepare for winter rest.
Winter hardiness
Cardamine kitaibelii is extremely hardy and tolerates temperatures to -20 degrees Celsius. The plant overwinters well in alpine gardens in temperate zones to zone 3. Wet winters are more problematic than harsh frost.
Companion plants
Cardamine kitaibelii looks lovely with other spring bloomers like primula, saxifrages, and dwarf conifers. Also beautiful combinations with hostas, alpine foamflower, and helleborus. Perfect for alpine beds, rock gardens, and mountain slopes.
Closing
Cardamine kitaibelii is a valuable addition to the alpine garden. With its rapid growth, ephemeral beauty, and reliability, it offers many advantages for those who love mountain flowers. The white spring blooms provide a welcome change from typical yellow and blue alpine flowers. Available through specialized nurseries. Gardenworld.app provides design support for mountain gardens.
