Plant in partial shade in acidic, humus-rich soil with good moisture retention. Use rainwater when watering — alkaline tap water raises the pH. Mulch annually with leaf mould or conifer bark. Feed in spring with specialist rhododendron fertiliser.

Remove spent flower trusses carefully by snapping them off by hand, without damaging the growth buds beneath. Major pruning is seldom needed. Remove dead wood in early spring.
