Plant in partial shade to full shade in moist, humus-rich soil. The lady fern needs more moisture than the male fern. Mulch annually with leaf compost to retain moisture. Water regularly, especially during dry summers. Avoid dry, sunny sites.

The foliage dies back in winter. Leave dead fronds as protection until early spring, then clear them before new growth appears. Divide crowded clumps every three to four years in spring.
