Plant in partial shade in moist, humus-rich soil. Protect young plants in their first winter with mulch. Water regularly during dry spells — dry soil leads to poor flowering. Avoid sites with cold, drying winds.
Leave flower stems until late autumn for their decorative seed heads. Cut back foliage to ground level after the first frost. Disturb established plants as little as possible — they recover slowly from transplanting.
Hosta sieboldiana
Hosta is the quintessential shade plant, valued for its large, blue-green, ribbed leaves. Light purple or white bell-shaped flowers appear on tall stems in July and August. Over the years the plant forms substantial clumps that give a shaded border a lush character.
Miscanthus sinensis
Chinese Silver Grass is a striking ornamental grass that adds structure to any garden with its tall plumes and gracefully arching leaves. Silvery-white plumes appear from August to October and catch the autumn and winter light beautifully. The dried grass remains attractive throughout winter.
Hydrangea macrophylla
Hydrangea is a popular garden shrub with large, globe-shaped flower heads blooming from June through September. The flowers turn blue in acidic soil and pink in alkaline soil. A sturdy plant that thrives in sheltered spots with partial shade.
