What is a sensory garden?

A normal garden mainly appeals to the eye. Green, form, color. But a sensory garden appeals to all five senses: scent, touch (texture), sight (color), sound, and even taste (herbs). This gives your garden depth. You feel more relaxed, more yourself, more... alive.

A sensory garden is not hard. It mainly requires attention in plant choice. Fragrant species, soft surfaces, colored flowers, moving grasses and trees, and edible herbs. Everything you already have, just more intentionally arranged.

TL;DR

Sensory garden = plant selection per sense. SCENT: lavender, jasmine, roses. TEXTURE: fine grasses, velvet plants (Iresine), rough stone/wood. COLOR: blooming cycle (yellow-purple-blue-red), green tints (silver, gray-green). SOUND: grasses in wind, water (fountain), bird feeder. TASTE: herbs (basil, oregano). All combined in one garden creates a meditative space.

Which scents bring which experiences?

Scent is the most memory-linked sense. A certain smell brings back childhood. Use this deliberately.

Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia): Calming, helps sleep. Scent June-July strong. Plant full sun, well-drained. 'Hidcote' is dark violet, compact. 'Munstead' is lighter, larger. Both indestructible.

Jasmine (Jasminum officinale): Sweet, sensual, especially strong evenings. Grows as climber 2-3 meters. White flowers May-September. Grows full sun to half-shade. Somewhat frost-sensitive (to -5 degrees).

Rose (Rosa, varied): Scent varies. 'Constance' (pale pink, strong scent), 'Munstead Wood' (dark red, fragrant June-October), 'Gertrude Jekyll' (pink, very fragrant). Plant full sun. Scent peak July-October.

Elderberry (Sambucus nigra): White flowers May-June with strong sweet scent. Grows fast. Attracts bees and birds. Scent is carried far, not intrusive.

Mint and Melissa (Mentha, Melissa officinalis): Fresh scent as you walk by. Yellow-green Melissa livelier than plain mint. Plant in pot (mint spreads wild). Scent May-September.

Which textures are pleasant to feel?

Texture is undervalued. A garden with only hard stone feels different than soft moss and velvet plants.

Fine grass carpet: Festuca ovina (blue fescue), Carex oshimensis 'Evergold' (fine grass, yellow-green). Let grow to 20-30 cm, soft to walk beside. Feels like carpet.

Velvet plants: Iresine herbstii (red-purple leaf), Senecio cineraria (silver-gray, very soft when touched), Celosia 'Plumosa' (fluffy, soft flower). These feel velvety. Kids love to touch.

Rough wood and stone: Contrast feels. Rough tree stumps, rough brick wall, smooth water surface. Variety makes garden interestingly tactile.

Moss and low-growers: Moss feels soft. But grow moss only half-shade, moist. Ground covers like Soleirolia soleirolii (soft green carpet in shade) gives soft effect.

Which colors bring which moods?

Color is mood-changer. Red = energized, blue = calm, yellow = happy. Plant this intentionally.

Happy yellow (April-May): Forsythia (yellow, May), Coreopsis 'Zagreb' (yellow, May-October). Both give lifted mood.

Restful blue (June-September): Agapanthus (blue-violet, July-August), Delphinium (deep blue, July-August). Agapanthus is stronger, winter-hardy. Delphinium prettier flowers but weaker.

Warm red (July-October): Rudbeckia 'Red Sun' (red-orange, July-October), Crocosmia 'Lucifer' (burning red, July-September). Both give energy.

Silver-gray tints (all year): Senecio cineraria, Artemisia 'Powis Castle' (gray-green, very elegant). This feels refined. Silver prevents strong summer colors from dominating.

Which sounds do you make?

Sound is forgotten. But sound gives the garden life.

Moving grasses: Grasses in wind make soft whispering sound. Miscanthus sinensis 'Gracillimus' (fine, slender blades, fine sound). Calamagrostis (reed-grass, louder sound). Place where you see them sway.

Water: A small fountain gives constant soft sound. Not large needed. A water-table 1x1 meter with pump (30-50 watts) gives quiet clocking sound. Birds drink too.

Birds: Bird feeder attracts birds. Different species sing differently. Blackbird = quiet whistle, Starling = chirping, Great Tit = high chirp. Plant native shrubs around spot: elderberry, hazel, blackberry.

Step-by-step

Step 1: Determine your sense priorities

What appeals to you most? Scent above all? Or color? Or movement-sound? Set priorities. This determines your base plan.

Step 2: Choose fragrant plants

Lavender and Jasmine as base. Rose as accent. Plant in full sun in April-May.

Step 3: Add texture elements

Install soft grass carpet. Plant velvet plant (Iresine, Senecio) where you walk. Rough wood/stone contrasts.

Step 4: Plan your color scheme

Yellow (spring), blue (summer), red (autumn). This gives seasonal change.

Step 5: Install sound elements

Plant grasses for wind sound. Place fountain central. Bird feeder in corner.

Step 6: Add edible element

Basil, oregano, thyme in pots or bed. Feels culinary.

Frequently asked questions

Can I make a sensory garden on small terrace?

Yes. Even 2x3 meters works. Pot with Jasmine climber on wall (scent). Fine grass box (texture). Lavender pot (scent). Small water bowl (sound). Herb pot (taste).

Do sensory gardens need lots of maintenance?

No. Lavender, Jasmine, Rose, Grasses: all standard care (pruning February). Scent element asks less than normal garden.

Rose for scent - which is easy?

'David Austin' roses are easy and fragrant. 'Lady of Shalott' (orange-pink), 'Munstead Wood' (dark red), 'Abraham Darby' (apricot-pink). Plant full sun (6+ hours), well-drained.

Can I get water sound without large fountain?

Yes. A small water-table (30 liters, pump 30 watts, 20 euros). Or water-tripper (pond with moving ball). Or simple: let downspout drip into garden water bucket. Sound comes.

Winter - what happens to scents?

Lavender stays green, scent less. Jasmine sheds leaves. This is normal. Plant winter bloomers (sarcococca, viburnum bodnantense) for winter scent (December-January).

Can children play in sensory garden?

Yes! This is why many therapy gardens have sensory gardens. Children feel, touch, listen. Just ensure safety: toxic plants (digitalis, oleander) not in child zone.
