Why a water feature in your garden?
Water brings life to your front yard. Frogs, dragonflies, birds - they all come. Moreover, a neat water feature looks beautiful and adds structure.
But many build a pond and give up: the water goes green, fills with algae, starts smelling. Maintenance becomes a nightmare. The secret is: proper installation with pump, filter, and plant choice determines whether your feature stays clear or turns murky.
What is a low-maintenance water feature?
A low-maintenance water feature combines:
- A suitable basin size (minimum 1000 litres)
- A circulation pump and filter
- Plant choice that keeps water clean
- Correct structure (shallow zones for water levels)
With this combination you work with natural ecology, not against it.
Choosing materials
Basin size: The larger, the more stable. Small (500 litres) is difficult. A good working size is at least 1000-1500 litres. This breathes easily and algae problems are less likely.
Lining: EPDM rubber or plastic PVC? EPDM lasts longer (40+ years), plastic (10-15 years). EPDM is more expensive but better long-term.
Pump and filter: This is your water quality heart. You need:
- A circulation pump (500-1000 litres per hour, depending on basin)
- A biological filter (removes dirt)
- Optionally UV clarifier (kills algae with UV light)
Step by step
Step 1: Choose location
Pick a spot for your water feature. Preference: partial shade (not full sun - sun speeds algae growth, not full shade - water lilies want sun).
Ensure your spot is not under hanging leaves (fallen leaves rot in water, cause stink).
Step 2: Excavate basin
Determine shape and size. Dig at least 80 cm deep (ideal for fish and frog overwinter). Create a wide shallow zone (0-30 cm deep) at the margins - water lilies and marginal plants grow here.
Dig carefully: no sharp rocks on bottom. This tears your lining.
Step 3: Prepare and line
Lay sand or old cloth on the bottom (protection against sharp stones). Lay your EPDM lining. Ensure it lies evenly - no wrinkles.
Place stones around the rim to secure lining.
Step 4: Pump and filter installation
This is critical. Place your pump at the bottom of the basin (usually a submersible pump). Connect tubing to your biological filter (outside the basin, on a fixed spot).
The filter draws water up, purifies it, and returns it to the basin via return tubing. This circuit runs continuously.
Check your tubes - securely connected, no leaks.
Step 5: Water lilies and aquatic plants
This is the secret sauce. Plant growth eats algae (nutrients). With food plants, water stays clean.
Good choices:
- Water lilies (need sun, various depths)
- Water speedwell (fast-growing, eats nutrients)
- Floating plants (water garden)
- Marginal plants (iris, sedge, primula)
Plant generously - a full margin is a clean margin.
Step 6: Start pump
Fill your basin slowly (rainwater inlet preferred). Ensure your lining fills neatly without tears.
Start your pump when basin is full. Let it run continuously. This is the trick: constant water circulation prevents stagnation.
Step 7: Water stabilises
After installation it takes a few weeks for water to stabilise. You will see:
- Week 1: water may turn green (algae growth from light + nutrients)
- Week 2-3: Biological filter starts biofilm (good bacteria) and eats nutrients
- Week 4+: Water clears
Patience needed. No panic - this is normal.

Maintaining your water feature
With a good system, minimal maintenance:
- Monthly: Check pump and filter (clean silt layer in filter)
- Season changes: Remove dead plant parts (especially autumn)
- Yearly: Inspect filter media (replace if dirty)
- Water quality: Test a couple times yearly (pH, clarity)
Frequently asked questions
Can I have fish in my water feature?
Yes, but only if you are deep enough (minimum 80 cm) and winter cold enough to prevent ice (or with underwater heater). Fish eat mosquitoes and larvae - handy!
My water turns green - what do I do?
Green water = algal bloom. Causes usually: too much sun plus nutrients. Solution: more aquatic plants (eat nutrients), install UV clarifier, or increase filter media.
Can I use tap water?
Better not - tap water contains chlorine and minerals that disturb your filter ecology. Rainwater is better.
How much power does my pump consume?
A standard garden pump (500-1000 L/h) uses roughly 20-40 watts. Running 24/7, that is about 50-100 euros per year (depending on electricity).
My basin smells - is it saveable?
Smell equals anaerobic zones (no oxygen). Causes: too much rotting material, insufficient water movement. Solution: remove dead plant parts, increase pump strength, ensure whole basin is reached.
What happens in winter?
With good volume and depth (80+ cm), fish and frogs overwinter under ice. Pump can be off in winter (prevent ice damage). Check occasionally for gas build-up (gently break ice).
