What if moss is taking over your lawn: causes and control

Why does moss grow?

Moss grows where grass dies. Grass loves: pH 6.0-7.0, good nutrition, sunny, well-aerated. Moss loves: low pH (4.5-6.0), wet, shaded, compacted. When your lawn conditions swing, moss takes over.

Causes of moss growth:

1. Acidic soil (pH under 6.0): Moss favourite. Dutch soils often 4.5-5.5 - very acidic. Grass feels unwelcome. Moss yes.

2. Compacted soil: Poor aeration, water blocks. Grass weakens. Moss grows anyway.

3. Poor drainage: Waterlogging in winter/rain. Grass fades. Moss thrives.

4. Too much shade: Grass needs 4-6 hours sun. Under trees: shade + acidic leaf-litter = moss paradise.

5. Weak nutrition: Starved soil. Grass weak. Moss opportunist.

6. Compacted surface: Traffic, play areas compress soil. Air gone, grass gone.

Cause #1: Acidic soil (most common)

Test it: Soil pH tester (online, 10-20 euros). Test 5-10 spots on your lawn. Result under 6.0? That is your problem.

Solution: Liming (add lime)

Lime raises pH. Two options:

1. Lime fertiliser (preferred): Calcium ammonium nitrate or potassium lime in March/April. Also provides nutrition (nitrogen, potassium). Spread on wet grass, water. Effect: 6-8 weeks. Cost: 20-30 euros per bag (500 m2). Result: pH from 5.0 to 6.2 in 2-3 months.

2. Pure lime: Just slaked lime. Works faster than lime fertiliser. Harder to dose. Cost low.

Cause #4: Too much shade

Trees, buildings = no sun = moss wins.

Solution:

1. Prune trees: Thin branches so 40-50% light passes through. Effect: more sun to lawn. But no guarantee - if under 4 hours sun: grass fails.

2. Alternatives: Plant shade-tolerant moss-resistant grasses (Festuca rubra, Poa supina) instead of standard. Or accept: moss is natural here. Make it nice with path layout.

Cause #5: Poor nutrition

Starved soil = weak grass = moss.

Solution: Feed

1. NPK Lawn fertiliser: Nutrition in March and September. Follows pH boost (lime). Cost 15-25 euros. Effect: stronger grass, less moss.

2. Add compost: Spread garden compost layer (1-2 cm) in March. Nutrition and organic matter. Cost: 50-100 euros per m3.

Remove moss mechanically

Quick "fix" but NO long-term solution:

Moss raking:

• Use heavy rake to comb out all moss (May/October).
• Effect: lawn looks better, but moss returns in 6-12 months.

• Disadvantage: heavy work, and root cause unsolved.

Chemical moss killer (MCPA, ferrous sulphate):

• Spray kills moss quickly.
• Effect: moss blackens, dead in days. But: pH not raised, drainage not improved, nutrition not fixed.
• Result: moss returns in 3-6 months.
• Cost: 20-30 euros.
• NOT recommended as only solution.

Step-by-step plan (complete recovery)

Step 1: Test pH

Buy soil test, test 5-10 spots. Result under 6.0? Continue.

Step 2: Lime (calcium ammonium nitrate)

March/April. Spread per packet (e.g. 50 kg per 500 m2). Water. Repeat October.

Step 3: Aeration

October or March. Hire scarifier or hollow-tine machine. Treat entire lawn. After machine: moss very visible (bad appearance!), but grass grows stronger.
