What is peat soil?
Peat soil forms in low-peat areas: regions where water stood for centuries and organic matter accumulated with little decay. That organic matter consists mainly of incompletely rotted plant material, lots of fungi, lots of acids. It looks dark brown, feels very dry and crumbly when dry, and water cannot be held well when the surface layer dries.
Peat soil is full of nutrition (very much organic matter) but that nutrition is locked by low pH. Much nutrition is unreachable because the ground is too acidic. Plants grow poorly or not at all.
The biggest problem: acidity
Peat soil is fundamentally acidic. pH 4-5 is typical. Most acidic soils are natural - it is just the soil type. But peat soil feels the extreme. Most plant roots stop growing below pH 5.5. Your garden goes flat.
Why acidic? Much organic matter contains lots of humic acids. These are natural compounds from rotted leaf matter, but they make ground acidic. Sulfur in peat soil also rests and converts to sulfuric acid (literally). Historical much water and anaerobic conditions also favored acid formation.
Lifting pH to 6-6.5 is the first step. Then your nutrition unlocks.
The second problem: subsidence
Peat soil contains very much organic matter. This dead organic material crumbles further slowly. It dissolves. Volume decreases. This is called "subsidence" or "oxidation."
This sounds weird, but it means: your ground sinks. Over ten years your garden bed can sink 10-20 cm. Bottom layers of your ground rot away without you doing anything.
This is not completely preventable, but you can slow it with:
- Lots of watering (keeping wet slows oxidation)
- No excessive digging (spreads organic matter breakdown faster)
- Adding organic matter (replaces what goes away)
Inspection and diagnosis
Before you fix peat soil, you must know what you have. Many low-peat areas have peat soil, but not all. Buy a pH meter (cheap, available online). Measure your current pH in several spots in your garden. pH 4-5 is typical peat soil. pH 5.5-6 is already better.
Also important: measure water retention. Grab a handful of ground after a dry week. Does it feel moister than you expect? Peat soil holds water tight. This is the big problem.
How do you fix peat soil?
Step 1: Lift pH with lime
You need lime cement or dolomite lime. Dolomite is better because it also gives magnesium.
Amount: for pH 4.5 to 6.5 over 30 cm deep: roughly 2-3 tons per hectare. For a square meter roughly 0.2-0.3 kg.
So: 100 liter cubic container? roughly 20-30 grams dolomite lime per container.
Not all at once. Add lime, wait two weeks, measure pH again.
Step 2: Improve structure with sand
Peat soil is organic slurry. It holds water like a sponge, but structure is missing. Sand loosens it.
Add sand: 20-30% of your top 20 cm. Also: add ripe compost for nutrition without further acidifying.
Step 3: Moisture management
Peat soil must stay moister than other soils. Not waterlogging, but moister. Mulch helps lots: it cuts evaporation and keeps oxygen loss low.
Long dry periods are peat soil death. The organic matter oxidizes fast, it shrinks, plant roots die.
Step 4: Feed nutrition with care
Much nutrition is present, but unreachable because of pH. Now you have lifted pH, that nutrition unlocks. Adding fertilizer costs money and re-acidifies the ground.
Wait two-three seasons before adding lots of nutrition. Let your ground recover first.

Which plants grow well on peat soil?
Many plants prefer pH 6.5-7.0. On peat soil (pH 4-5) they struggle.
Grow well on acidic ground:
- Hydrangeas (keep acidic color)
- Wildly blueberry / blueberry
- Heather types
- Rhododendrons
- Magnolia
- Birch plants
- Blue/purple flowers (much blue-blooming loves acidic ground)
Poor on acidic ground:
- Vegetable crops (roots-grain-etc)
- Many herb plants
- Many flowers (roses want pH 6.5+)
Can I lift pH fast?
Cautiously. Too much lime at once can make ground stiff. Stepping up gradually (0.2-0.3 pH per season) works better.
How much water should peat soil have?
Not waterlogged. But moister than sandy garden. Good starting point: ground feels moister than you would expect for "just dry."
If surface is dry but 5 cm deep still moist: good.
Do I need to dig peat soil?
No. Digging accelerates oxidation. Let it lie. No-dig with sand-compost on top works much better.

How long does it take to repair peat soil?
Year one: lift pH, start structure. Year two: plants respond better now. Year three: much more stable. Year five: plant choice can be much wider.
So: serious patience needed.
Do fertilizer granules work on peat soil?
Cautiously. Much fertilizer is acidic. The best option is organic fertilizers (compost, animal manure) because they release slowly and do not re-acidify the ground.
Can I fix the drainage problem with sand?
Mostly yes. Peat soil is water-saturated because organic matter holds it. Mixing sand makes it looser. Not perfect, but much better.
Do worms need to adapt to peat soil?
Yes, peat soil is acidic for many worms. But once you lift pH, worms colonize it fast. They wait for better conditions.

Step 1: Measure your pH
Buy a pH meter (cheap online). Measure your current pH. If below 5.5: you have work.
Step 2: Add lime
Add dolomite lime per pH-rise goal. Start small: 0.2 kg per square meter. Wait two weeks. Measure again.
Step 3: Add sand and compost
Mix: 50% sand 50% ripe compost. Add layer of 10-15 cm.
Step 4: Mulch and water
Mulch from leaf litter (5-10 cm). Manage water so ground stays moister than you would expect.
Step 5: Adjust plant choice
Acid-lovers as first years. Once pH rises, more variety.
The long view
