Ilex aquifolium (Holly, 200–400 cm, sun–half-shade) Evergreen, red berries (female), glossy foliage. Grows wild along Zeeland coast. Winter-hardy –20°C. Salt-tolerant cultivars.

Calluna vulgaris (Heather, 30–60 cm, sun) Groundcover, many cultivars (purple, white, red), bloom August–October. Sand-lover, salt-tolerant. Winter-hardy –25°C.

Preparing sandy soil

Sand drains too well — moisture-retention is lacking.

Water retention: Work 5–10 cm compost into top 30 cm. This helps water-retention without compromising drainage. Repeat yearly (3–5 cm).

Mulch: Organic mulch (leaf mold, chipped wood) 5–7 cm. This helps soil moisture and nutrition.

Feeding: Sand retains nutrition poorly. Organic fertilizer (manure, blood meal) in March and July needed.

April–May: Growth starts, first flowers (Holly). Salt wind can still be cold.

June–July: Full growth, bloom of many herbaceous species. Summer warm.
