Verbascum blattaria, known as moth mullein or blattaria mullein, is an elegant biennial plant that distinguishes itself from other mulleins through its refined, yellow flowers. This plant feels at home in sunny garden corners and provides delicate, prolonged blooming throughout summer.

Overview

Verbascum blattaria belongs to the family Scrophulariaceae and is a biennial plant that naturally occurs from Europe to North Xinjiang and Afghanistan, and also in North Africa. This elegant species is known for its very slender, delicate growth and its long blooming period.

The plant usually reaches heights of 60 to 150 centimeters and especially in its second growing year forms a striking accent in borders. The moth mullein is much more delicate than its larger relative, the common mullein (Verbascum thapsus).

Appearance and bloom

Verbascum blattaria has thin, upright-growing stems that are sparsely set with leaves. Lower leaves are larger and form a rosette, while upper leaves become progressively smaller and more scale-like.

Blooming occurs from May through September and produces yellow or sometimes white flowers in a long, slender flower spike. The flowers open gradually from bottom to top, ensuring prolonged flower beauty. Each flower is approximately 2-3 centimeters in diameter and consists of five round petals.

Ideal location

Verbascum blattaria flourishes best in full sun. A spot with at least six to eight hours of direct sunlight per day is ideal. This plant tolerates no shade; full, unobstructed sun is essential for optimal flowering.

Plant this biennial happily in groups or borders where it can stand against dark foliage backgrounds. The slender growth and yellow flowers offer elegant contrast with dark green leafage.

Soil composition

Verbascum blattaria is extremely tolerant regarding soil type. It thrives on fertile soils but also tolerates poor, merely draining grounds. A mixture of 60% sand or coarse grain and 40% garden clay works excellently.

The plant prefers neutral to slightly alkaline soils (pH 6.5 to 8.0). Addition of sand or gravel is recommended if soil is heavy clay. Drainage is much more important than nutrition.

Watering and moisture management

Verbascum blattaria is drought-loving and tolerates drought well. Water at planting and regularly during the first growing season, but reduce watering once the plant is established.

In the second year (blooming year), the plant requires minimal watering. It actually thrives better in dry conditions. Waterlogging is the deadliest enemy of this plant.

Pruning and shaping

Pruning is hardly needed. Remove withered flowers regularly (deadheading) to encourage blooming. This also prevents seed setting, causing the plant to bloom longer.

Very carefully you can support the stem with discrete stakes if strong wind threatens. Usually this is not necessary.

Maintenance calendar

First year (May to October): Sow in full sun on draining soil. Water only during drought. Pruning not needed. Second year (May to September): Blooming; remove withered flowers for extended blooming. After blooming in October allow seed setting or pull plant.

Winter hardiness

Verbascum blattaria is extremely cold hardy in its first year, even in very severe climate. Dies back naturally after seed production or is naturally displaced from soil.

No winter protection needed; the plant is biennial and overwinters without problems.

Companion plants

Verbascum blattaria combines beautifully with other drought-loving plants such as Nepeta, Thymus species, and lavender. For color contrast, add blue sage.

In Mediterranean gardens, this plant fits well between roses and other classic rocky plantings. Works well with Dianthus and dwarf Artemisia.

Closing thoughts

Verbascum blattaria is an elegant, low-maintenance accent in carefree gardens. The refined growth, long blooming period, and drought-tolerance make it a valuable choice for various garden situations.

Seed is available from most vegetable and herb seed merchants. Sow directly in full sun on well-draining soil for natural, elegant garden results. Visit gardenworld.app for more garden plant inspiration.
