Overview
Country-mallow (Sida cordifolia), also known as heart-leaf sida or flannel sida, is a tropical to subtropical shrub from the Malvaceae or mallow family. This adaptable plant is renowned for its heart-shaped leaves and attractive yellow flowers that appear throughout much of summer. Originally from tropical and subtropical regions of Africa and Asia, it typically grows 1-1.5 meters high and is utilized in warm-climate gardens, as container specimens, and in contemporary landscapes.
Select this plant for gardens where heat and drought prevail, or when creating tropical atmosphere.
Appearance and Bloom
Country-mallow displays an upright growth habit with numerous branches, creating a full, bushy appearance. Leaves are heart-shaped to kidney-shaped with fine pubescence, giving them a soft texture. Stems are similarly hairy.
Flowers are yellow and appear singly or in small clusters along stems from April through October, with peak bloom during summer months. Although individual flowers are modest, their abundance throughout the growing season ensures continuous flowering.
Ideal Location
Select a very sunny location receiving minimum six to eight hours direct sunlight daily. This tropical plant tolerates no shade. Provide warmth; the plant performs poorly below 15 degrees Celsius.
The plant thrives even in windy situations.
Soil
Country-mallow grows in well-draining, moderately fertile soils. This is not a plant for wet, heavy clay soils. Use potting compost with added sand or perlite for enhanced drainage in containers. The plant accepts slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0-7.0).
Watering
Once established, this is a drought-tolerant plant. Water moderately during growing season when soil surface becomes dry. Reduce watering in autumn and winter.
Container specimens require more frequent watering than open-ground plants.
Pruning
Prune in early spring to maintain compact, full shape. This also stimulates increased blooming. Remove dead stems and foliage regularly.
Maintenance Calendar
- Spring: Prune for shape, increase watering
- Summer: Provide full sunny location, water regularly
- Autumn: Gradually reduce watering frequency
- Winter: Minimal watering; in cold regions, bring this plant indoors
Winter Hardiness
Country-mallow is frost-sensitive. In temperate climates (USDA Zones 9-11), the plant can grow outdoors. In cold regions, grow as annual or overwinter indoors on sunny location.
Companion Plants
Perfect partners include other tropical plants such as hibiscus, lantana, and bougainvillea. This plant works well in containers with other heat-loving species.
Closing
Country-mallow is an excellent choice for gardeners in warm climates seeking adaptable, flower-rich plants with tropical character. Heart-shaped leaves and yellow flowers make this a striking addition to containers and warm-climate borders.
