Overview

Tree stonecrop (Sedum dendroideum) is a succulent from Mexico and Guatemala that occurs in tropical regions but can also grow in temperate climates. This interesting succulent grows as a compact shrub with fleshy, olive-green leaves and produces yellow-white flowers in spring and early summer. With its low water requirements, sculptural form, and exotic appearance, tree stonecrop offers a unique addition to succulent or drought-tolerant gardens.

Appearance and Bloom

Tree stonecrop grows as a compact shrub, typically 30-60 centimeters tall with characteristic thick, gelatinous leaves. The leaves are light green to olive-colored, forming dense rosettes on thick stems. From March to May, yellow to yellow-white flowers appear in dense cymas (flat flower clusters) at branch tips. The flowers are small but numerous and attract bees. The flowering period lasts two to four weeks.

Ideal Location

Plant tree stonecrop in full sunlight for optimal growth and bloom. At least four to six hours of direct daily sunlight is needed. Position it in warm, sheltered location away from cold winds. In warmer climates (USDA zones 9-11), it can grow outdoors, but in temperate regions it's best container-grown and brought indoors during cold months. A sunny patio or balcony corner is ideal.

Soil

Tree stonecrop requires well-draining, sandy soil. Use specialized succulent potting soil or replace regular soil with one-third fine gravel/volcanic pumice and two-thirds potting soil. Heavy clay soils must be completely avoided. In gardens, beds can be created with sand and gravel. Soil pH can be alkaline to neutral, neither problematic.

Watering

Watering is where tree stonecrop truly distinguishes itself. Water very sparingly - approximately once every two weeks during growing season (spring-summer). In fall-winter, water drastically reduces. Always check if soil is dry before watering. The plant thrives in dry environments and overwatering can damage roots. In rainy climates, extra caution may be needed.

Pruning

Pruning of tree stonecrop is minimal. Remove only dead or damaged leaves carefully. The plant will naturally maintain an attractive form. Very overgrown specimens can be gently cut back to one-third in spring, but this is not essential. Also remove faded flower clusters after blooming to keep the plant neat.

Maintenance Calendar

Spring: Gradually increase watering as growth begins. March-May: Flowering period, enjoy yellow blooms. June: Growing season, minimal water. July-August: Very little water, plant tolerates drought. September-October: Gradually reduce water. November-February: Minimal water, keep nearly dry in cold climates.

Winter Hardiness

Tree stonecrop is not cold-hardy in cold climates. It cannot tolerate frost and dies if temperatures drop below freezing. In zones 9-11, it can overwinter outdoors. In temperate regions, bring it indoors before night temperatures drop below 10 degrees Celsius. Store in cool but frost-free location (ideally 5-10 degrees Celsius).

Companion Plants

Tree stonecrop combines well with other succulents. Consider echeveria, aeoniums, and other sedums for textural contrast. Agaves and aloes also work. For contrast, add silver-foliaged plants like artemisia or senecio. In a winter garden, it can be placed with other tropical succulents.

Closing

Tree stonecrop is a spectacular succulent for houseplant enthusiasts or gardeners with protected, sunny locations. With its exotic appearance, minimal water requirements, and interesting bloom, this succulent delivers beauty for years. Find this plant at specialized succulent nurseries. Some larger garden centers carry similar sedums. Plant this preferably in a container and enjoy this Mexican beauty.
