Overview

Shepherd's-needle (Scandix pecten-veneris) is an unusual annual or short-lived plant in the Apiaceae (carrot) family, celebrated for its exceptional characteristic long seed pods that resemble fine combs or needles. This plant grows wild in grain fields and cultivated land across Europe and West Asia, historically used as livestock fodder and for medicinal purposes. In modern gardens, it is prized as a decorative element for its unique seed structure and delicate foliage.

Appearance and Bloom

Shepherd's-needle develops lacy, finely dissected, filigree-like leaves resembling wild carrot or parsley, reaching 15-30 cm tall. White to very pale pink flowers appear in small dense umbels characteristic of the carrot family. After flowering, very distinctive seed pods form, 5-8 cm long, tapering to extremely fine needle-like points resembling combs or sewing needles. These seed pods give the plant its English name "Shepherd's needle" and French "Peigne de Venus" (Venus's Comb).

Ideal Location

Requires full sun to light shade with at least 4 hours of direct sunlight. Plant in flower beds, wildflower meadows, abandoned plots, or rough ground where it can self-sow undisturbed. Prefers dry to moderately moist soil. Protection from strong winds is helpful as delicate foliage can be easily damaged. Works well along pathways and borders.

Soil

Prefers standard garden soil with good drainage. Can grow in poor, lean soil but flowers better with moderate fertility. Sandy-loam mixtures are acceptable. pH 6.0-7.5. No special soil amendments needed. Plants grow even on rocky, compacted ground. Simple soil preparation suffices.

Watering

Water moderately when soil becomes dry during growing season, especially during extended dry periods. Once established, very drought-tolerant. Keep young plants slightly more moist. With prolonged drought, reduce watering and allow self-seeding. After seed ripening, greatly reduce water. This plant survives unexpected drought.

Pruning

No pruning needed. Allow seed to ripen naturally. Remove plants after seed has ripened and allowed to fall for next season's growth. Deadheading is unnecessary though removes spent flowers. Clean up dead foliage when plant dies back.

Maintenance Calendar

March-April: Direct sow seed in final location. May-June: Thin crowded seedlings as they develop. June-July: Regular watering, monitor growth. July-August: Allow seed to ripen, reduce watering. August-September: Collect seed when dry, allow plants to die back, prepare soil.

Winter Hardiness

Though annual, plants from late summer sowing overwinter as young rosettes in cold climates. Semi-evergreen foliage. No special protection needed except in extremely cold areas. In warmer climates it can grow year-round.

Companion Plants

Combines beautifully with other lacy flowers or fine-foliaged plants such as Daucus carota (wild carrot) or Foeniculum vulgare (fennel). Plant with Centaurea (cornflower), Papaver (poppy), Veronica (speedwell). Perfect for naturalistic, uncultivated wildflower borders.

Closing Thoughts

Shepherd's-needle is a fascinating addition to wildflower meadows for its unusual seed structure and minimal requirements. Seed is available from seed merchants and wildflower suppliers. This plant provides structure and interest from summer through autumn seed stage. Highly rewarding for nature lovers and botanical enthusiasts.
