Overview

Red Lungwort (Pulmonaria rubra), also called Bethlehem-sage and Christmas cowslip, is a clump-forming shade plant native to the Carpathian mountains. With bright red spring flowers and silver-spotted foliage, it provides months of garden interest beneath trees and shrubs. This is an invaluable shade-loving specimen.

Appearance & Bloom Cycle

Red Lungwort forms compact clumps approximately 25-35 cm tall. The foliage is heart-shaped with silvery-white spots, providing year-round ornamental value. Flowers emerge from March through May in dense clusters on short stems. The blooms are bright red to orange-red, measuring roughly 1.5 cm across. Older flowers gradually fade to pink.

Ideal Location

Red Lungwort thrives in dappled shade to full shade. It tolerates 2-4 hours of gentle morning or midday light but flowers well even in deep shade beneath deciduous trees. In warm climates, shade helps preserve flower color and prolongs bloom time.

Soil Requirements

Use nutrient-rich, well-draining soil that remains evenly moist. Work substantial amounts of compost or leaf mould into planting areas. The plant tolerates pH ranging from acidic to neutral (5.5-7.5). Avoid compacted soil and excessively dry conditions.

Watering

Water regularly, especially during dry periods. The plant prefers consistently moist but not waterlogged conditions. Mulch around plants to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Summer irrigation may be necessary during drought.

Maintenance

Remove spent flower clusters after blooming for neater appearance. Cut away old foliage in March before new growth emerges. This plant self-seeds sparingly; remove seed heads if you prefer to control spread. Divide clumps approximately every three years.

Maintenance Calendar

March: Remove old foliage; flowers begin emerging. April-May: Enjoy vibrant red flowers; water well. June-August: Remove spent flower stems; maintain moisture. September-October: Plant spreads modestly via seed. November-February: Plant is dormant; minimal care required.

Winter Hardiness

Red Lungwort is very hardy, suitable for USDA zones 4-8, making it ideal throughout northern Europe. Foliage remains evergreen in mild winters.

Companion Planting

Combine with other shade-loving spring bloomers such as hepatica, hellebores, anemones, and dicentra. Works beautifully as groundcover beneath contrasting foliage plants like heuchera. Plant in drifts beneath trees for stunning woodland effects.

Transform dark garden corners with Red Lungwort. Find plants at specialist nurseries or garden centers like OBI or Hornbach in Germany.
