Overview

Snow Cinquefoil (Potentilla nivea) is a low-growing alpine plant native to arctic and subalpine mountain regions. Also known as snowy cinquefoil, this highly hardy plant is perfect for rock gardens, alpine troughs, and well-drained containers. Its silver-gray foliage and pure white flowers make it a treasured addition to alpine collections.

Appearance & Bloom Cycle

Snow Cinquefoil forms compact mats typically 10-30 cm tall. The foliage is small, silver-gray and finely hairy, creating an attractive silvery appearance. Flowers emerge from June through August, displaying pure white to pale yellow petals approximately 1 cm in diameter. Blooms are borne on short stems at the plant's tips.

Ideal Location

This alpine plant thrives in full sun to light shade - provide at least 4-5 hours of direct sunlight daily. Good air circulation is essential, particularly important in humid climates. The plant becomes leggy and flowers poorly in insufficient light.

Soil Requirements

Snow Cinquefoil demands excellent drainage above all else. Use gritty alpine potting mix containing fine gravel, sand, and minimal organic material. Soil pH may range from neutral to slightly acidic (6.5-7.5). Heavy clay and persistently wet soil lead to root rot and plant failure.

Watering

Water moderately during the growing season, particularly during dry spells. Once established, this mountain plant tolerates drought admirably. Excessive water causes more problems than insufficient water. After initial planting, water regularly until summer's end, then water very sparingly. Winter requires minimal watering.

Maintenance

Pruning is rarely necessary. Remove dead foliage and faded flowers in autumn. Avoid cutting into healthy tissue. This self-supporting plant requires no staking or special support structures.

Maintenance Calendar

March-April: Plant in prepared, well-draining soil. May-June: Begin regular watering until bloom period. June-August: Enjoy flowers; minimal care required. September-October: Remove dead flowers and foliage. November-February: Very limited maintenance; plant is dormant.

Winter Hardiness

Snow Cinquefoil is extremely hardy, suitable for USDA zones 2-4, surviving even extreme alpine conditions. Throughout northern Europe, this plant demonstrates outstanding winter hardiness.

Companion Planting

Combine in alpine rock gardens with other mountain flowers such as saxifraga, sedum, campanula, and alpine phlox. Group in odd numbers (3, 5, 7) for natural appearance. Excellent for edging around stone walls and rock outcrops.

Create authentic alpine garden schemes with Snow Cinquefoil. Find plants at specialty nurseries or garden centers like OBI or Hornbach in Germany.
