Overview
The Pilea microphylla, popularly known as the Artillery plant or Gunpowder plant, is a charming, compact tropical plant from the Urticaceae family. This plant is native to Mexico through Central South America and the Caribbean. With its delicate, fine foliage and compact growth, it makes a popular houseplant or office plant. The plant is famous for its mechanical flowers that produce tiny popcorn-like pops when touched.
Appearance and bloom
The Artillery plant grows as a low, spreading to trailing plant, usually 15-30 cm tall. The leaves are very small, round and light green in color, giving the plant a fine, moss-like texture. Inconspicuous yellow flowers appear year-round, followed by tiny round seeds that "shoot" when ripe, hence the name.
Ideal location
This plant grows best in warm, humid climate (18-24°C, minimum 60% RH). Place it in a bright, indirect location without direct sunlight. Near (but not directly against) a window is ideal. Avoid drafty locations and heat from radiators. The plant tolerates lower light levels better than many houseplants.
Soil
Use a light, nutrient-rich potting soil with good drainage. A mixture of 50% peat moss or coco-coir, 30% perlite and 20% compost works well. Drainage is essential; overwatering in waterlogged conditions leads to immediate decline.
Watering
Keep the growing medium consistently moist, but not waterlogged. Water when the top 1-2 cm of soil feels dry. In warm, humid conditions, this may mean watering every 2-3 days. In cooler months, reduce to weekly. Soft, room-temperature water is preferred.
Pruning
Pruning is not necessary but pinching the tops promotes bushier growth. Regularly remove yellowed or wilted leaves. This plant generates much debris; cleaning helps prevent fungal diseases.
Maintenance calendar
Spring: Begin regular misting; increase watering; start with weak fertilizer every two weeks. Summer: Keep consistent moisture level; enjoy rapid growth. Fall: Reduce watering and feeding. Winter: Lower watering and feeding; keep it somewhat cooler.
Winter hardiness
Not frost hardy; this is a pure houseplant. Minimum temperature is about 12°C, but it grows best above 18°C. This is a tropical plant for indoor use.
Companion plants
Excellent in small terrariums or mixed container gardens with other tropical plants. Combines well with other light-growing tropical plants like fittonia or peperomia.
