Overview
Phlebodium aureum, commonly called Golden polypody or rabbit-foot fern, is a tropical epiphytic fern from southeastern America and the Caribbean. This fascinating fern is characterized by stunning golden rhizomes (root systems) and large, fan-shaped green fronds. With its exotic appearance and easy care, it is a popular choice for indoor plant collections and conservatories. The plant can also grow outdoors in warm climates.
Appearance and growth
Golden polypody reaches 60 centimeters tall with large, fan-shaped fronds growing from golden rhizomes. The fronds are bright green and highly decorative. The characteristic golden rhizomes are usually visible and give the plant its distinctive name. This fern grows slowly but gradually forms a beautiful clump. Spores appear on the underside of fronds.
Ideal location
Prefers indirect bright light, such as near a window with sheer curtains. Direct sunlight can cause leaf burn. The plant can also grow under fluorescent lighting, which is ideal for home use. Place in warmer spots, away from drafts and heat sources.
Soil
Golden polypody grows as an epiphyte in nature, so it needs well-draining growing medium. Use orchid mix, loose potting soil, or specialty fern mix. Heavy soil with dense clay leads to root rot. Ensure water drainage holes in pots. A pH between 5 and 7 is suitable.
Watering
Water when the top portion of growing medium feels dry. Excessive water is the greatest enemy. During growing periods (spring-summer) water more, during rest periods (fall-winter) less. Ensure pots do not sit in water. Misting promotes healthy growth but is not essential.
Pruning
Layered, brown or damaged fronds can be carefully removed at the base. This promotes new growth. Pruning is not strongly needed, only to remove dead foliage. Handle carefully, as ferns are sensitive to damage.
Maintenance calendar
Spring: Water regularly, apply fertilizer. Summer: High water and warmth, misting. Fall: Gradually reduce watering. Winter: Minimal water, keep quiet.
Winter hardiness
Phlebodium aureum is not winter hardy and can only grow outdoors in warm zones 10-11. In colder climates, it is a true houseplant. Minimum temperature is approximately 10C. Protect against cold air drafts in homes.
Companion plants
In conservatories combines well with other tropical ferns such as Asplenium nidus or Platycerium bifurcatum. In indoor use works as a specimen plant. In tropical gardens combine with other epiphytic plants on bark-covered support material.
