Overview

Orchis spitzelii, commonly called Spitzel's Orchid or Alpine Orchid, is a delicate wild orchid from European mountains. This rare species blooms in May-June with tight spikes of purple-pink flowers of great botanical value. Orchis spitzelii is a true wild plant requiring very specific growing conditions matching alpine habitats.

This is not an easy-to-grow species - it is for enthusiastic orchid collectors and serious specialists. Orchis spitzelii grows from underground tubers and is strongly tied to specific soils and ecological associations. The plant is virtually never seen in cultivation in normal garden settings.

Appearance & Bloom

Orchis spitzelii blooms in May-June with beautiful purple-pink flowers grouped in tight spikes of great botanical elegance. The flowers have characteristic short spurs and are elegant alpine plants. Blooming lasts several weeks with peak in June.

The plant forms a narrow leaf cluster with linear leaves from low growing point tight to ground. After blooming, above-ground parts die back naturally where the tuber overwinters in full rest until next spring.

Ideal Location

Orchis spitzelii grows in mountain regions in lightly shaded locations with good drainage and stable moisture. The plant feels at home on limestone mountain meadows and part shade from light tree canopy. In nature, it grows at elevations of 500 to 2000 meters.

In gardens, position in part shade on raised beds with very limestone-rich soil that never dries completely. Preference for light shade under light-canopied trees or with north-facing aspect. No strong midday sun.

Soil

Orchis spitzelii requires very specific soil conditions: limestone-rich (pH 7.5-8.0), well-draining, humus-rich soil. In nature the plant grows on drained mountain meadows. Soil composition is extremely important for success.

In gardens use mix of leaf mould, coarse sand and gravel (1:1:1 by volume). This mimics the alpine-mountain growing conditions. Absolutely essential: no water stagnation but never complete drying either, always drainage.

Watering

Orchis spitzelii grows from October to May when snowmelt provides water in natural settings. During this period maintain fairly moist conditions but never waterlogging. From June to September the tuber is in full rest and should be kept dry.

Water only when soil surface becomes dry during growing season October-May. The plant feels at home in mountain regions where rainfall is regular but drainage is quick. Moisture control is crucial for success.

Pruning

Pruning does not apply to this species. The plant grows from tuber and requires no active pruning. After blooming, above-ground material dies back naturally to tuber.

Maintenance Calendar

October-May: Growing season. Keep moisture regular. Tuber roots and forms flowers.

May-June: Flowering period. Observe beautiful alpine orchid blooms.

June-September: Rest period. Tuber in full dormancy. Keep dry, no watering.

September-October: Preparation for new season. Tuber awakens.

Winter Hardiness

Orchis spitzelii is fully winter hardy in European alpine climates. The tuber is tied to annual rhythms with cold winters that are necessary for normal blooming.

Companion Plants

Orchis spitzelii grows in nature with:

  • Other alpine orchids
  • Alpine grasses
  • Small saxifrages

In cultivation, difficult to combine with other plants due to specific requirements.

Conclusion

Orchis spitzelii is for enthusiastic orchid collectors. Requires patience, precise soil preparation, and deviation from standard gardening practices. The beautiful blooms reward the effort for someone truly dedicated.
