Overview

Malcolmia maritima, better known as Virginia stock or Mahon gillyflower, is a fast-growing annual plant native to Albania and Greece. This compact bloomer has been cultivated in European gardens for centuries and is now found in many other regions. The plant is renowned for its ability to grow rapidly, flower profusely and require very little maintenance.

Unlike many other annuals, Malcolmia maritima can reach full bloom just six to eight weeks after sowing. This makes it ideal for garden planners who want quick results. The plant flowers in a wide range of colours, from white to pink to purple, depending on the variety.

Appearance and bloom

Malcolmia maritima forms a compact, densely branched plant that typically grows 30 to 50 cm tall and just as wide. The stems are thin but strong and covered with fine hairs.

The leaves are elongated to lance-shaped, approximately 3 to 8 cm long, with a dull green colour. They have a rough surface and are arranged alternately on the stems.

The flowers are the real highlight of this plant. Small, four-petalled flowers grow in loose clusters towards the top of the plant. Each flower is approximately 1 to 1.5 cm wide and has a papery texture. The colour ranges from deep purple, pink, lilac to white, with many intermediate shades. Some varieties have dark eye spots. Flowering begins in May and can continue until October, especially with regular deadheading of spent flowers.

After flowering, small, narrow seed pods develop, as is typical for Brassicaceae plants.

Ideal location

Malcolmia maritima flowers best in full sun. At least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily is required for optimal blooming. In shadier spots, the plant will grow but will flower less and show more leaf growth.

The plant tolerates partial shade in very warm, dry areas where it provides protection from the midday sun.

Soil

Malcolmia maritima is not fussy about soil. The plant grows well in sand, clay, loam and everything in between. The only essential requirement is good drainage; stagnant water causes root rot.

A pH between 6.5 and 7.5 is ideal. The plant can grow in poor to moderately fertile soil. Excessive feeding can promote leaf growth at the expense of flowering.

Watering

Regular, consistent watering is important for this fast grower. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Especially during the growing season and flowering period, regular watering is essential.

During drought, plants quickly want to flower and set seed, shortening the flowering period. Conversely, excessive watering can cause fungal problems, especially on humid summer days.

In hanging pots and containers, watering is needed more frequently than in open ground.

Pruning

Regular deadheading significantly encourages further flowering. This process is crucial for a prolonged flowering period.

If the plant becomes too tall or thin in June-July, it can be carefully cut back halfway. This stimulates more branching and better form.

At the end of the season, plants can be removed entirely.

Maintenance calendar

Spring (March-May): Sow seeds directly outdoors after frost. Sow at intervals for staggered blooming.

Summer (June-August): Regular deadheading for full bloom. Regular watering.

Autumn (September-October): Blooming diminishes. Last sowing opportunities for autumn flowering.

Winter (November-February): Plants die off.

Winter hardiness

Malcolmia maritima is not winter-hardy. This is an annual plant that dies at frost. In very mild climates, seed can be weakened by cold, but in most areas you will want to resow annually.

Companion plants

Malcolmia maritima creates beautiful combinations with many other spring-flowering plants and can serve as underplanting for larger plants.

Good combinations include:

  • Forget-me-not (Myosotis)
  • Carnation (Dianthus)
  • Saxifrage (Saxifraga)
  • Scilla (Scilla)
  • Lily of the valley (Convallaria)

Closing thoughts

Malcolmia maritima is one of the fastest-flowering annuals you can grow. Perfect for gardeners who want quick results and prefer minimal maintenance. The plant is available in pots and seeds at garden centres. For more plant choices and inspiration, visit gardenworld.app.
