Overview

Sweetbay magnolia (Magnolia virginiana), also known as laurel magnolia or sweet bay, is one of the most fragrant magnolia species. The plant is native to the American Atlantic coast from Massachusetts to Texas and Cuba.

This is a semi-evergreen shrub to small tree with white, fragrant flowers blooming throughout summer.

Appearance and blooms

Sweetbay magnolia grows as a shrub or multi-stem tree, reaching 6-12 meters in cultivation. The leaves are glossy green, lance-shaped, semi-evergreen to evergreen (depending on climate).

The flowers are pure white, strongly fragrant with citrus and spice notes, appearing in May and continuing until September. The fruits are red, splitting seed pods with orange seeds.

Ideal location

Sweetbay magnolia grows best in full sun to light shade. Minimum 5-6 hours of direct sun. Protection from strong wind is desirable.

Use as a specimen tree, planted in groups, or as a backdrop in a mixed border. Very attractive to birds and insects.

Soil

Sweetbay magnolia prefers moist, well-draining soils. Ideal pH range: 5.0-6.9 (acidic to neutral).

The plant thrives in moist woodland soils. Improve dry soils with abundant organic matter (leaf mold). Heavy clay soils must be improved with sand and grit.

Watering

The plant is fairly drought-sensitive. Water regularly in the first year. Later, with normal moisture, supplemental watering is usually not needed.

During dry periods, water regularly. Mulching with 5-7 cm of organic matter helps retain moisture.

Pruning

Pruning is optional. The plant naturally maintains an attractive form. Remove only dead, damaged or diseased branches right after flowering.

If shaping is desired, do this in July-August, never after September.

Maintenance calendar

March-April: Inspect for winter damage; feed lightly.

May-September: Flowering period; no maintenance needed (water during drought).

October-February: Winter dormancy; water minimally.

Winter hardiness

Sweetbay magnolia is winter-hardy in USDA zones 5-9, making it suitable for the Netherlands, Belgium and France. The plant tolerates temperatures down to -18C.

In very cold winters, twigs may freeze; growth resumes from the base.

Companion plants

Combine with other native American plantings:

  • Aronia species
  • Ilex verticillata (winterberry)
  • Sambucus nigra (elderberry)
  • Cornus species (dogwoods)
  • Viburnum species

Also pairs well with Azalea and Rhododendron.

In closing

Sweetbay magnolia is a beautiful, fragrant tree that is less known but highly valuable for larger gardens. The plant thrives in moist gardens with shelter.

Availability: Specialized tree nurseries (Netherlands, Germany, France).
