Overview

Chinese water-spinach (Ipomoea aquatica), also called kangkong, is a fast-growing edible crop native to tropical regions of Asia. This water-loving plant has been cultivated for centuries for its nutritious leaves and tender shoots.

Appearance and Bloom

Water-spinach forms slender, hollow runners with lance-shaped leaves measuring 5-15 centimeters long. Flowers are pure white to pale pink, funnel-shaped, approximately 3-4 centimeters in diameter.

Ideal Location

Chinese water-spinach grows best in locations receiving 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Full sun is ideal. The plant is extremely heat-loving and thrives when night temperatures exceed 15-17C.

Soil

Water-spinach places very modest demands on soil composition. The plant even grows in pure water (hydroculture). For traditional soils use light, nutrient-rich medium with 40% compost.

Watering

This is the critical success factor. The plant requires near-daily watering during warm periods. Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. During intense heat, a single plant may consume several liters daily.

Pruning

Regular pruning stimulates branching. Begin pruning once plant reaches 20-25 centimeters tall. Pinch the growing tip. This induces bushy growth.

Maintenance Calendar

May: sow seed in heated environment. June-September: feed every 2 weeks. September-October: growth declines. November-April: outside temperate zones continue only in heated greenhouse.

Winter Hardiness

Not winter-hardy in Europe. Plant dies below 10C. It is an annual crop in temperate climates.

Companion Plants

Thrives with other moisture-loving crops. In aquatic systems: duckweed, water speedwell. Fish partners: tilapia, goldfish, carp.

Conclusion

Chinese water-spinach is miraculous for food gardeners. Start from seed in March, cut regularly from June. GardenWorld.app offers designs for water-based gardens.
