Overview

Busy lizzy (Impatiens walleriana), also known as Sultan's Balsam, is a popular annual flowering plant from Africa. This compact plant blooms abundantly with large, colorful flowers in red, pink, white and bi-color varieties. Thanks to its preference for shade and partial shade, Busy lizzy is ideal for dark corners, under trees and in pots on the balcony.

This plant provides non-stop flowers and rarely wilts, making it a favorite for busy gardeners.

Appearance and bloom

Busy lizzy reaches 20 to 40 centimeters height and forms a compact, rounded growth pattern. The leaves are oblong, soft green and semi-transparent. The flowers are large, about 4 to 5 centimeters in diameter, with five petals and sometimes double forms.

The flowers appear from May to October non-stop, in warm periods extremely abundantly. Colors range from bright red to soft pink, white and blended shades. After blooming, small seed pods form that burst open when ripe (hence the name "Impatiens").

Ideal location

Busy lizzy blooms best in partial to full shade. At least two to three hours of indirect sunlight is desired; full shade is possible. This makes it perfect for dark corners under trees, along walls with little sun and on north-facing balconies.

In full sun flowers can fade and the plant may experience drought stress. Protected spots shield against strong wind that can break delicate stems.

Soil

Busy lizzy grows best in humus-rich, well-draining potting soil. A mix of garden soil, leaf mold and sand is ideal. The plant likes to stay constantly moist, but not waterlogged.

When planting in beds amend the soil with compost or garden soil. Heavy clay soil should be lightened. For pots use quality potting soil with good drainage holes.

Watering

Busy lizzy requires regular, even moisture. Water when the top 1 centimeter of soil feels dry. In summer daily watering may be needed. Still prevent the soil from becoming waterlogged, as this leads to root rot.

During drought stress the plant wilts quickly, but usually revives after watering. In pots requires more frequent watering than in beds. Misting can help during very warm periods.

Pruning and maintenance

Busy lizzy requires no intensive pruning. However, you can remove spent flowers to encourage further blooming. In May you can prune the plant in half to promote compact growth.

If you want to collect seeds, let some seed pods ripen. These burst open on their own and spread seed. For overwintering you can take cuttings in September.

Maintenance calendar

May: Seed sowing indoors or purchase plants. June: Plant in beds and pots; water regularly. July-September: Blooming and feeding; remove spent flowers. October: Blooming declines; gradually reduce watering. November: Plant dies or can be brought indoors to overwinter. December-February: Rest period (if overwintered).

Winter hardiness

Busy lizzy is not frost-hardy and dies when temperatures drop below 10 degrees Celsius. This is an annual plant grown as a summer bedding plant.

If you want to keep the plant, bring it indoors before the first frost. Place on a sunny windowsill and provide average room temperature. Reduce watering significantly in winter.

Companion plants

Busy lizzy combines beautifully with shade-loving plants such as Heuchera, Hosta and Fuchsia. In pots it grows well with Bacopa, Ivy and Scaevola (Fan Flower).

In dark beds it harmonizes with Begonia and Brunnera. Provide variation in height and foliage texture.

Final thoughts

Busy lizzy is a reliable flowering annual for shaded gardens and containers. With regular watering and feeding it blooms non-stop until the first frost.

Seed and plant material are available at garden centers and online nurseries from April onward. Gardenworld.app helps you find the perfect shaded spot for optimal blooming. With basic care you will enjoy rich flowering colors throughout the summer season.
