Overview

Annual hyoseris (Hyoseris scabra), also known as rough pig-lettuce or rough hyoseris, is an interesting Mediterranean annual herb from the Asteraceae family. This plant is native to the Mediterranean region and is known for its small yellow flowers and characteristic rough leaves. Reaching heights of 30 to 60 centimetres, the herb grows quietly and discreetly in lean, dry soils.

Appearance & bloom

Hyoseris scabra has characteristic rough leaves growing at the base of the plant and marked with small teeth. The plant has narrow, upright stems with few leaves. The flower heads appear with yellow colouring and are only a few centimetres in diameter. Blooming occurs from April to May during the growing season. The plant reaches its full height of 30-40 centimetres when in full bloom.

Ideal location

Annual hyoseris grows optimally in sunny locations receiving at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily. The plant tolerates dry conditions and thrives on coasts and warm locations where many other plants struggle. The plant is ideal for Mediterranean gardens and rock gardens. Plant in lean spots where nutrients are unavailable. Suitable for borders and dry meadows.

Soil

Hyoseris scabra grows well in lean, poorly nourished soils and even tolerates very dry, rocky soils. The plant is not particular about pH and grows well in acidic to neutral soils. Ensure well-draining soil. In heavy clay soil, sand can be added for improved drainage. The plant even tolerates stony soils.

Watering

Annual hyoseris is very drought tolerant and requires only minimal watering once established. Water only if the weather is extremely dry or immediately after planting. The plant grows best in dry conditions and excessive moisture can be harmful. No watering needed in winter. The plant is ideal for gardens where water conservation is desired.

Pruning

Pruning is limited for Hyoseris scabra. Remove wilted flowers for neat appearance. Damaged or diseased parts can be removed. After blooming, stems can be removed. No further pruning needed for this herb.

Maintenance calendar

Autumn-Winter (September-February): sow seeds or plant seeds in autumn. Spring (March-April): sow and grow. April-May: enjoy blooming. May-June: seed setting. June-July: harvest seed. Remove plants at the end of summer once they've completed their cycle.

Winter hardiness

Annual hyoseris is not winter hardy in the traditional sense as an annual plant, but self-seeds in mild climates. In very cold regions the seed must be resown annually. In Mediterranean climates the plant returns via self-seeding. The plant grows best in warm, dry summers.

Companion plants

Hyoseris scabra pairs well with other Mediterranean plants. Combine with lavender, sage and thyme. Group with other drought-loving plants. Plant in wildflower gardens or meadows. Suitable for rock gardens and herb gardens.
