Overview
Oak-leaf hydrangea (Hydrangea quercifolia) is an impressive ornamental shrub from the Hydrangeaceae family, native to southeastern America. This plant is renowned for its large, oak-shaped leaves and spectacular white flower panicles that hang elegantly downward. Reaching heights of 1.5 to 2 metres, oak-leaf hydrangea is a striking addition to large gardens and landscapes.
Appearance & bloom
Hydrangea quercifolia has very characteristic large leaves resembling oak leaves, hence the name. The leaves are dark green during the growing season and colour beautifully red to purple in autumn. Flowers appear in long, hanging panicles during June to August. Each flower is small and white, but the mass of thousands of blooms creates impressive white candelabra-like structures visible from great distances.
Ideal location
Oak-leaf hydrangea grows optimally in locations receiving at least 4-6 hours of sunlight daily, although the plant can also grow in partial shade. The plant tolerates more shade than many other shrubs and flowers reasonably well in lightly shaded locations. Provide protection from strong afternoon sun in very hot climates. Plant away from strong winds. Ideal for back borders and as privacy screens.
Soil
Oak-leaf hydrangea grows best in moist, well-drained soils with a pH of 4.6 to 7.5. Add organic material such as compost or peat. The plant is not very nutrient-demanding and grows better in moderately lean soils than in very nutrient-rich soils. Ensure adequate drainage to prevent water stagnation. Mulching helps retain moisture and buffers soil temperature extremes.
Watering
Oak-leaf hydrangea requires regular watering, especially during the growing season and dry periods. Ensure the soil alternates between wet and dry periods, not continuously wet or dry. Water deeply but less frequently than shallow, regular watering. Mulch helps retain moisture. In winter, watering can be reduced.
Pruning
Pruning is important for Hydrangea quercifolia to maintain shape and compactness. Pruning can occur immediately after blooming, so in August or September. Remove dead stems and check for diseases. Rejuvenate old shrubs by cutting some of the oldest stems completely to the ground. Pruning in very dry seasons may be necessary for maintained gardens.
Maintenance calendar
Spring (March-April): fertilise and refresh mulch. May: water regularly. June-August: enjoy blooming and monitor water loss. August-September: prune after flowering. October-November: enjoy autumn colour. December-February: winter protection in very cold regions.
Winter hardiness
Oak-leaf hydrangea is hardy to -18 degrees Celsius in many regions, although in very cold climates protection can be useful. Young plants may benefit from protection in their first winters. Snow damage is possible in very heavy snowfall. The plant is suitable for gardens in zones 5-9 in many European regions.
Companion plants
Hydrangea quercifolia pairs well with many other plants. Combine with other shade-loving plants such as hostas and ferns. Plant together with azaleas and rhododendrons for a woodland effect. Group with hellebores and corydalis for a natural woodland understory effect. Suitable as back-border shrub.
