Overview

American witch-hazel (Hamamelis virginiana) is a unique native shrub highly valued for its autumn and winter flowers that appear when all other garden plants have closed or faded. This North American native offers colorful yellow to red-yellow blooms when many other garden plants have already lost their leaves and appear dormant. Witch-hazel is a classic choice for mature established gardens and has a long history of use in traditional medicine. The branches were traditionally used for water divining. The plant is very rewarding and relatively low-maintenance once established.

Appearance and bloom

Witch-hazel grows as a shrub up to 6 meters tall, sometimes more in ideal conditions. The plant develops a natural, open branching structure. The leaves are broad, approximately 10 centimeters long, lightly elliptic to reverse egg-shaped, with rough texture. Leaves turn golden yellow to orange-red in autumn before complete leaf drop. Characteristic strap-like flowers appear October through January, yellow to red-yellow, approximately 1 centimeter long, very aromatic and fragrant. The flowers have a fascinating structure with very long, narrow petals that curl and contort interestingly.

Ideal location

Plant witch-hazel in full sun to partial shade with preference for some shade in very warm areas. The plant thrives in sheltered gardens and against south-facing walls in mixed exposures. Avoid strongly windy locations where flowers could be damaged. Space at least 3 meters from other shrubs for optimal development of the plant's natural form.

Soil

Witch-hazel thrives in acidic to neutral soil with a pH between 4.5 to 6.2 (slightly acidic is ideal). Add humus-rich soil amendments and work in leaf mould or peat moss for acidity. Good drainage is essential; avoid permanent waterlogging which causes root rot. Works well in most soil types, including clay soils, as long as drainage is good.

Watering

Water regularly for the first three years for deep rooting and establishment. Adult plants tolerate drought much better after establishment. Provide water during dry summers, especially during the growing season from June to August. Mulch to 7 centimeters (straw, leaves or compost) for moisture retention and protection of shallow roots.

Pruning

Minimal pruning needed as plant naturally assumes attractive form. Remove damaged, dead or cross-growing branches. After blooming in January-February, you may gently shorten the plant for compactness, but this is not strictly necessary. Always prune immediately after blooming to avoid reducing next season's flowers. Remove low-hanging branches for safety and access.

Maintenance calendar

January-February: Pruning possible immediately after blooming. March-April: Growing season begins. May: Moisture management if dry. June-August: Summer care, mulch maintenance. September-October: Bloom period approaches. October-December: Full blooming and winter care. December-January: Bloom and maintenance.

Winter hardiness

Witch-hazel is winter hardy to minus 20 to minus 25 degrees Celsius, very cold-tolerant. No protection needed in Northern European winters. Leaves drop but plant survives easily. Ideal for harsh climates where other shrubs struggle.

Companion plants

Plant alongside other shade-tolerant plants such as rhododendron, azalea, sarcococca and Daphne. Combines beautifully with ferns and shade-loving flowers such as anemone and helleborus. Forms attractive backdrop for low-growing plants. Many birds attracted by the small fruit. Creates woodland garden atmosphere.
