Overview

Geranium erianthum, better known as Woolly geranium or Northern geranium, is a robust, winter-hardy geranium from the Geraniaceae family. Hailing from Eastern Siberia through northern Japan and the Aleutian islands, this plant thrives in cool mountain regions. Geranium erianthum is a wonderful ground cover growing to about half a meter, producing purple flowers with white centers, and requiring minimal care.

Appearance and bloom

Geranium erianthum forms low-growing, densely clothed plants with finely cut leaves of a soft, grayish-green tint. The leaves are woolly-fine in texture, earning the plant its alternate name "woolly geranium." Height varies between 30 to 45 centimeters.

The flowers are the true showstopper: in purple to lavender with white centers and purple veins. They appear throughout summer (June to August) in abundant quantities. Each flower measures about 2 centimeters in diameter and attracts bees and butterflies.

Ideal location

Geranium erianthum thrives in full sun to partial shade. In warm regions, afternoon shade is actually welcome. Plant it where it receives at least 5-6 hours of direct sun. The plant is very tolerant and grows even in difficult spots where other plants fail.

Use it as a ground cover in borders, between rocks, or under trees.

Soil

Geranium erianthum is not particularly fussy about soil type, but it grows best in well-drained, moderately fertile soil. It tolerates both acidic and neutral to slightly alkaline soils well. Heavy clay can be lightly improved with sand and compost.

The plant tolerates drought better than soggy soil. Soil that dries quickly is actually ideal.

Watering

Once established, Geranium erianthum is reasonably drought-tolerant. Water regularly in the first growing season until it's well-rooted. After that, water is only needed during prolonged dry periods. The plant dislikes wet winter conditions.

In areas with normal rainfall, you typically don't need to water at all.

Pruning

Geranium erianthum requires minimal pruning. After flowering (August-September), you can trim the plant back to about 10-15 centimeters above ground to encourage more compact growth. This is optional. Remove dead leaves and stems in spring.

The plant largely maintains itself and becomes more beautiful with age.

Maintenance calendar

Spring: Remove dead material from last year. Water well if it's dry.

Summer: Enjoy the purple flowers. Water only in extreme drought. Dead flowers can remain.

Fall: Water minimally. Plant prepares for winter.

Winter: No care needed. Plant goes dormant.

Winter hardiness

Geranium erianthum is very winter hardy to zone 3 (-35 degrees Celsius). This is very robust for gardeners in cool climates. The plant tolerates hard frost, snow, and ice without issue. Underground roots protect the plant from extreme cold.

Companion plants

Geranium erianthum combines well with other ground covers and perennials: Sedum, Sempervivum, alpine forget-me-nots, and small bulbs. It also forms beautiful underplanting for taller plants.

The purple flowers contrast beautifully with yellow or pink flowering neighbors.

Closing thoughts

Geranium erianthum is an essential plant for anyone seeking an effortless, winter-hardy ground cover. The combination of clean purple flowers, robustness, and very low maintenance needs makes this geranium an absolute must-have. Plant in groups of 3-5 for maximum effect.
