Overview
Dimocarpus longan, commonly known as longan or dragon's eye, is a tropical fruit tree from East Himalaya through South China. This tree produces delicious, sweet fruits that resemble lychee but with a unique, pleasant flavor. Longan is popular in Asian gardens and increasingly common worldwide.
The name "dragon's eye" refers to the small black seed surrounded by white, juicy flesh - it truly resembles a tiny dragon's eye. The tree is also remarkably productive, with mature trees yielding hundreds of fruits per season.
Appearance and Bloom
Longan is an evergreen tree with elegant, compound leaves consisting of 7-9 leaflets. The foliage is bright green and provides a fine texture to the tree.
The flowers are small, yellow-green flower clusters (panicles) containing numerous tiny blooms. They are inconspicuous but highly attractive to bees and other pollinators. After pollination, flowers set fruits that grow in clusters, resembling grapes.
The fruits are smooth, round, light brown to yellow when ripe. They reach approximately 1-2 cm diameter with thin, delicate skin.
Ideal Location
Longan grows best in full sun. Minimum 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily is essential for optimal fruit production. Insufficient light will result in minimal to no fruiting.
Place the tree in a wind-protected location, especially during flowering and fruiting periods. Ensure good air circulation around the tree to prevent diseases.
Soil
Longan prefers well-draining, fertile soil with pH between 5.5 and 7.5. The tree tolerates a broad range of soil types but thrives in sandy to light clay soils.
Amend planting holes generously with organic matter. Mulch helps keep soil fertile and moist without waterlogging. Good drainage is critical - the tree cannot tolerate wet feet.
Watering
Regular watering is important, especially during growth and fruiting seasons. Keep soil consistently moist but never waterlogged. Young trees require more frequent watering than mature specimens.
During dry periods, daily misting may be necessary. Reduce watering during the dry dormant season but ensure the tree doesn't completely dry out. Mulch aids moisture retention.
Pruning
Longan naturally develops an attractive form. Minimal pruning is required. Remove only dead, diseased, or severely misshapen branches.
Formative pruning can occur in early spring. Heavy pruning may disrupt flowering. Use sharp, clean tools.
Maintenance Calendar
January to March: Flowering period preparation - ensure adequate water and fertilization. April to May: Flowering and fruit set - maintain stable watering and wind protection. June to September: Fruit development - regular watering and feeding essential. October to December: Harvesting and dormancy - harvest ripe fruits, reduce watering.
Winter Hardiness
Longan is tropical and cannot tolerate frost. Grow outdoors only in warm regions (USDA 10b-12). In temperate climates: container growing with winter protection.
Temperatures below 10°C will cause serious damage.
Companion Plants
Longan grows well with other tropical fruit trees like mango, papaya, and banana. Underplanting with shade-tolerant tropical herbs works well.
Closing Thoughts
Longan is a fantastic choice for tropical gardens. With minimal pruning and good water and nutrient management, your tree will provide abundant harvests for years. The sweet fruits are a genuine delight.
