Overview

Hairy crocus (Crocus pulchellus) is an autumn-flowering species native to the Balkans and northwestern Turkey. This member of the Iridaceae family brings welcome color to the garden when many other flowers are fading. Named for the distinctive hairy stigmas visible inside each bloom.

Appearance and bloom

This compact crocus reaches approximately 10-15 centimeters in height with narrow, grass-like foliage. The flowers are bright purple to violet with distinctive hairy orange stigmas that add unique interest. Blooming from September through October, these flowers provide a welcome color injection when autumn fades.

Ideal location

Hairy crocus thrives in full sun positions with excellent drainage. This is an ideal plant for rock gardens, crevices in stone walls, alpine containers, and naturalized settings where it can spread freely.

Soil

Excellent drainage is essential. Create a gritty, well-draining mix combining gravel, sand, and rich compost. Neutral to slightly alkaline soils are well tolerated.

Watering

Moderate water during the growing season, especially in drier periods. After flowering, reduce water as the plant enters dormancy for summer.

Pruning

No pruning required. Remove spent flowers for tidiness.

Maintenance calendar

  • Summer: Dormancy, keep dry
  • Autumn: Growth begins, moderate moisture
  • Winter: Dormancy after flowering, keep dry
  • Spring: Prepare for summer dormancy

Winter hardiness

Fully hardy throughout Northern Europe and tolerant of temperatures down to -15 degrees Celsius.

Companion plants

Other autumn-flowering crocuses, Colchicum, alpine thyme, Sedum species, other mountain plants.

Closing thoughts

Hairy crocus offers a unique opportunity to add autumn color when other flowers fade. Their robust nature and striking purple blooms with distinctive hairy stigmas make them perfect choices for rock gardens and naturalized areas.
