Overview
Naked-flowering crocus (Crocus nudiflorus), also called autumn crocus or Pyrenean crocus, is an elegant bulb from the Iridaceae family. Originating from Southwest France and Northern Spain, it's recognized as one of the few autumn-flowering crocuses. At only 10 to 15 cm tall, it creates a refined detail in grassy gardens.
Appearance and bloom cycle
Naked-flowering crocus displays unique blooming behavior: flowers appear without leaves, hence the name 'naked.' From August to October, delicate lilac to purple-violet flowers emerge. Foliage appears later and remains through spring. The flowers are fragrant and attract bees.
Ideal location
Naked-flowering crocus grows best in sunny locations with at least 5 to 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. Full sun produces the best blooms. In very shaded areas, flowering diminishes. Suitable for grasslands, borders, and small gardens.
Soil requirements
This crocus demands excellent drainage. Well-draining, sandy to loamy soil is essential. High moisture levels must be avoided. Plant on slopes or in focused groups on drier ground. Organic matter can be incorporated but not excessively.
Watering
After planting, water so roots establish well. Water regularly during the growing period. Once established, these crocuses need very little water. They actually thrive in drier conditions.
Pruning
No pruning needed. After blooming, faded flowers can be carefully removed. Leave foliage until completely withered; this provides nutrients back to the bulb.
Maintenance calendar
Spring: monitor foliage emergence. Summer: minimal care. Autumn: enjoy flowers, fertilize if desired. Winter: no maintenance needed.
Winter hardiness
Naked-flowering crocus is extremely hardy to -20°C (USDA zone 5a). This plant thrives in cold winters and tolerates frost very well.
Companion plants
Group naked-flowering crocus in grasslands beneath shrubs or in borders. Combine with other autumn-flowering bulbs like colchicum and sternbergia. In rock gardens, it makes an attractive detail.
Where to buy
Naked-flowering crocus is available at garden centers, especially in late summer and autumn stock. Ensure healthy, full bulbs without damage. Discover more autumn bloomers at gardenworld.app.
