Overview

Crepis aurea, commonly known as golden hawksbeard or golden crepis, is a charming mountain flower native to central Europe through the Balkans. This wild herbaceous plant belongs to the Asteraceae family (composites) and is renowned for its vibrant yellow flowers appearing during summer months. In its natural habitat, it grows on mountain meadows and rocky slopes, but it can also thrive in gardens when planted in appropriate conditions.

Although an alpine plant, Crepis aurea is far easier to cultivate than many other alpine species. It self-seeds readily and forms attractive colonies over time.

Appearance & Bloom

Crepis aurea grows as a compact, leafy rosette-forming plant, usually 30-50 cm tall when in full bloom. The leaves are lance-shaped, greenish, and form the base of the plant from which flower stems emerge.

Flowers appear from June through August and are truly the spectacular element of this plant. They are soft golden-yellow to orange, approximately 2-3 cm across, and grow in loose, branched flower clusters at the ends of long stems. Each flower is a composite - constructed of hundreds of tiny florets working together as one flower. The blooms are highly attractive to bees and other pollinators.

After blooming, the plant forms characteristic seed heads with feathery seed dispersal structures that spread beautifully on the wind. This seed dispersal helps the plant naturally regenerate.

Ideal Location

Crepis aurea grows best in full sun. Place it where it receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. With adequate sunlight, the plant will remain dense and compact, and flower production will be maximal.

In partial shade it can still grow, but will become more open and leggy, and flowers will be less abundant. Avoid deep shade.

The plant thrives in rock gardens, alpine areas, stone gardens, and borders. It can also be grown in pots on balconies and terraces. The relatively compact growth and preference for well-draining soil makes it ideal for these applications.

Soil

Crepis aurea thrives best in well-draining, non-rich soils. Alpine plant-like, it tolerates poor, rocky soils better than fertile ones. This helps prevent the plant from becoming too rank and leggy.

Neutral to slightly acidic soil (pH 6.0-7.0) is ideal. Lime-rich soil is also tolerated. The key requirement is excellent drainage: the plant tolerates waterless, dry periods well, but cannot handle waterlogged feet.

Add coarse sand or perlite to heavier soils at planting time to enhance drainage.

Watering

Once established, mature Crepis aurea plants tolerate drought spells well. They have moderate water requirements, especially when well-draining soils are present.

During the first year after planting, ensure regular, moderate watering, especially during dry periods. The roots must establish well.

In dry summers, extra water can be beneficial, but generally rainfall in temperate climates will usually suffice. If the plant shows yellowed leaves and appears limp, this might signal too much water rather than too little.

In pots, more frequent watering will be needed because containers dry faster than ground beds.

Pruning & Maintenance

Crepis aurea requires minimal pruning. Remove faded flowers if you wish to extend blooming - this prevents seed formation and encourages the plant to produce more flowers.

At season's end, when the plant dies back, you can remove dead above-ground parts. However, leave some vegetation because the plant regenerates from a winter rosette.

Annual self-sown seed will likely scatter nearby and form new plants. This may be desirable, or you can remove extra seedlings to maintain control.

Maintenance Calendar

Spring: Remove dead winter remains. Water moderately as growth begins. Check for self-seeded seedlings.

Summer: Water during dry periods. Remove faded flowers to extend blooming. Check for aphids.

Fall: Allow seeds to ripen. Remove above-ground parts after fall frost.

Winter: Plant is completely dormant. No watering needed. Minimal maintenance required.

Winter Hardiness

Crepis aurea is fully hardy in temperate Europe. It can tolerate USDA zones 5-8, meaning it can withstand temperatures down to -28°C. This makes it suitable for gardens in the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Germany, and further north.

The plant grows better in cooler climates and may be somewhat challenging in warm zones, though it will still grow under good conditions.

Propagation

Crepis aurea propagates easily from seed. Seed can be sown directly into the ground in spring or fall. Seed germination is straightforward: seed needs no stratification and germinates at room temperature in about 1-2 weeks.

Self-sown flowers usually occur, and seedlings appear naturally in the vicinity of parent plants.

Companion Plants

Crepis aurea combines beautifully with:

  • Edelweiss - Same alpine growing requirements
  • Dianthus - Compact form and nice contrasting colors
  • Saxifraga - Similar rocky soil preference
  • Pulsatilla - Same bloom season and growing needs
  • Sedums - Dry soils and similar dimensions

Ensure companions also prefer well-draining soil.

Closing

Crepis aurea is a sturdy, hardy herbaceous plant that brings true beauty to rock gardens, alpine areas, and borders. Its yellow flowers brighten dark corners and attract pollinators. With minimal care requirements and excellent winter hardiness, it's a highly attractive choice for temperate gardens.

Search for Crepis aurea seeds at specialized seed suppliers or young plants at alpine garden centers. Intratuin and similar stores occasionally stock alpine plants.
