Overview
Crassula pubescens, better known as Jersey pigmyweed, is a charming succulent native to the southern Cape Provinces of South Africa. This tiny to very compact succulent features a unique combination of delicate hairy leaves and pink flowers that enhance its appeal. With its minimal care requirements and interesting texture, it's a perfect choice for succulent enthusiasts and gardeners seeking low-maintenance plants.
Although Crassula pubescens originates from warm, dry Africa, it is cultivated and appreciated in many places worldwide. In milder climates, it can grow outdoors, while in colder regions it's best grown indoors or in protected containers.
Appearance & Bloom
This succulent grows as an extremely compact, densely branched plant, usually no more than 15-20 cm tall. The most characteristic feature is the leaves: small, densely clustered, and covered with soft white hairs (hence the name "pubescens"). These hairs give the plant a grayish-greenish appearance and feel soft to the touch.
The leaves are essentially elliptical and grow opposite each other on the stems. In good sunlight, the leaves can take on a beautiful red-pink tint, making the plant even more attractive.
Flowers appear in spring or early summer at the branch tips. They are small and soft pink to white, gathered in small, elegant flower clusters. The flowers aren't abundant but are certainly elegant, and they attract bees and other pollinators.
Ideal Location
Crassula pubescens is a light-loving plant that thrives best in full sun. Place it where it receives at least 5-6 hours of direct sunlight daily. Insufficient light leads to elongated, weak growth.
The plant is ideal for sunny windowsills (especially south or west-facing), sunny spots in the garden, and can even be grown outdoors in pots during warm seasons. In very hot climates, light afternoon shade in summer can be beneficial, but most locations can handle full sun.
Due to its compact size, Crassula pubescens is ideal for potting on balconies, terraces, and indoors. The plant grows well in small containers, making it convenient for those with limited space.
Soil
Due to its succulent nature, Crassula pubescens requires very well-draining soil. Standard garden soil is far too moist for this plant and will cause root rot.
Use cactus and succulent potting soil, available at most garden centers, or make your own mix by combining regular potting soil with coarse sand, perlite, or pumice (ratios like 1:1 or even more sand). This ensures rapid drainage and prevents moisture buildup.
When growing Crassula pubescens in a pot, ensure the pot has drainage holes. Terracotta pots are actually better than plastic because they allow moisture to evaporate better.
The plant tolerates poor soils well - fertilization isn't critical. If you want to feed, use weak succulent fertilizer during the growing season (spring/summer).
Watering
Although an important care aspect, underwatering is far less likely to cause problems than overwatering. Crassula pubescens stores water in its leaves and can tolerate longer dry periods.
During the growing season (spring and summer), water moderately: wait until the soil is completely dry before watering again. This might mean once every two weeks to once a month, depending on temperature, light, and humidity levels.
In fall and winter, water drastically less. In winter you might not water at all if the plant is in a cool location - the plant enters dormancy. This helps stimulate blooming in spring.
General rule: better underwatered than overwatered. If in doubt, wait a few more days.
Maintenance
Crassula pubescens requires minimal maintenance. The plant is compact and grows slowly, so much pruning isn't needed. You can, however, gently remove dead or damaged leaves.
If the plant becomes too tall and leggy (usually due to insufficient light), you can pinch off the tips to stimulate branching. Let the cut site dry for a day before watering again to prevent rot.
Annual repotting isn't necessary. Repot only if the plant has clearly outgrown its pot or if the soil is depleted (usually every 2-3 years).
Maintenance Calendar
Spring: Increase watering frequency as temperatures rise. Start light feeding. Check for pests.
Summer: Maintain full watering schedule, regular water. Ensure adequate light. Reduce feeding slightly.
Fall: Gradually reduce watering frequency. Stop feeding.
Winter: Minimal water (only if soil is extremely dry). No feeding. Keeping it cool helps promote blooming in spring.
Winter Hardiness
Crassula pubescens is not winter hardy in most temperate climates. Temperatures below 10°C can cause damage, and frost is fatal.
In the Netherlands, Belgium, and France, the plant must be indoors or in a protected location during winter. However, it can be placed outside in pots during warm months (May through September).
Those in tropical or subtropical climates can grow it outdoors year-round, provided dry conditions.
Propagation
Crassula pubescens is easily propagated from leaf cuttings. Detach healthy leaves, let them dry for a few days, then place on moist succulent soil. They will form roots in a few weeks and produce small plants.
Seed can also be used, but leaf cuttings are faster and produce genetically identical plants.
Companion Plants
In pots, Crassula pubescens works well with other succulents:
- Echeveria - Similar growth requirements and texture
- Sempervivum - Compact form and minimal care
- Kalanchoe - Interesting flower colors and shapes
- Aloe vera - Larger, but same watering schedules
Mix different heights and textures for intricate pot compositions.
Closing
Crassula pubescens is a beautiful, low-maintenance succulent that gives much pleasure with minimal effort. Its compact growth, interesting hairy leaves, and pink flowers make it an attractive addition to any succulent collection. Whether you're experienced with succulents or just starting, Jersey pigmyweed is an excellent choice.
