Overview

The Samiland Gentian (Comastoma tenellum) is a remarkable alpine flower from the Gentianaceae family, also known as gentians. This slender, elegant plant thrives in cold mountain regions from Europe to the Himalayas and North America. With its characteristic soft purple flowers, this bird-like plant creates a stunning accent in alpine gardens.

Appearance & bloom

The Samiland Gentian is a herbaceous, slender plant typically 10-20 cm tall. The plant features fine, opposite leaves that grow closely along the stem. The flowers are small but distinctly beautiful, with four to five petals in soft purple to violet. Blooming runs from July to September. The leaves remain green throughout the growing season, forming an elegant contrast with the purple flowers.

Ideal location

This plant thrives in locations with plenty of daylight but not direct sunlight. Suitable for half-shaded spots in mountainous areas. Place the Samiland Gentian in locations where air circulation is good and water cannot stagnate. Mountain and alpine gardens, rocks and vegetable gardens are ideal. The plant likes to grow on North American mountain slopes and European alpine regions.

Soil

The plant prefers very well-draining soil with an acidic to neutral pH of 4.5 to 5.0. Add compost, peat and gravel to heavy clay soils to improve drainage. A mixture of 40% garden or mountain soil, 30% peat and 30% gravel works excellently. Ensure the soil is nutritious but not overly watered.

Watering

The Samiland Gentian prefers moderately moist soil during the growing season. Watering should happen regularly, especially in dry periods. Ensure water does not stagnate around the roots, as this causes rot. Reduce watering in winter when the plant is dormant. In rock environments, less frequent watering may be needed.

Pruning

Minimal pruning is needed for this delicate plant. Remove only dead flowers after blooming to prevent seed development and direct energy to new flowers. Gently remove damaged or diseased leaves. No serious pruning needed.

Maintenance calendar

March-April: Check for winter damage and slowly resume watering. May-June: Provide regular watering and minimal feeding. July-September: Blooming enjoys moderately moist conditions. October-November: Reduce watering and prepare plant for winter dormancy. December-February: Minimal care needed; only water in very dry winters.

Winter hardiness

The Samiland Gentian is hardy to about -20 degrees Celsius and grows in very cold mountain regions. This plant is therefore very suitable for cold winter climates. Protect against extreme wind gusts by placing in sheltered mountain valleys. In containers, the plant can be kept indoors for winter.

Companion plants

Combine with other alpine flowers such as crowfoots, wolf lilies and alpine houseleeks. Sedum species grow well next to the Samiland Gentian. Small conifers and alpine brilliance also offer beautiful visual combinations. Rock wallflower and alpine flame flower complete mountain gardens.

Closing

The Samiland Gentian is a beautiful but delicate alpine flower for lovers of mountain flora. With careful placement in well-draining soil and proper watering, this gentian thrives for years. Available at specialized alpine plant nurseries in the Netherlands, France and Germany.
