Overview
Caladium bicolor is a decorative foliage plant from the rainforests of Central and South America. These plants are prized for their spectacular, heart-shaped leaves that come in nearly every color imaginable: pure white, deep red, pink, green, and countless combinations. While the foliage is the star, caladiums also produce delicate white flowers that are far less showy than their stunning leaves.
This tropical beauty is beloved by collectors and interior designers for its dramatic appearance. Caladium bicolor makes an excellent houseplant but does require more attention than some other indoor plants.
Appearance and Bloom
Caladium bicolor gets its common name Heart-of-Jesus from its distinctly heart-shaped leaves. The foliage can grow 20-40 cm long and has a delicate, papery texture. Leaf colors vary dramatically: you'll find varieties with white leaves and red veins, red leaves with white spots, or combinations of pink, green, and white.
The plant grows from tubers and reaches 30-60 cm in height. Small, unobtrusive white flowers appear in summer, but they're far less noteworthy than the beautiful foliage.
Ideal Location
Caladium bicolor thrives in bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight can scorch the leaves, especially on light-colored varieties. A location near an east or west window is ideal. Ensure the plant isn't in drafts and that temperatures don't drop below 15 degrees Celsius.
Indoors, caladium works beautifully in warm, humid environments like bathrooms or kitchens. Avoid dry spots near heating systems.
Soil Requirements
Caladium bicolor prefers loose, nutrient-rich soil with excellent drainage. Mix potting soil with orchid bark or perlite for better drainage. The pH should be neutral to slightly acidic. Ensure plenty of organic matter in the soil - caladiums grow best in nutrient-rich conditions.
Watering
Keep the soil moist but not wet. During the growing season (spring and summer), water regularly - several times per week, depending on temperature and humidity. In autumn and winter, reduce watering as the plant enters dormancy.
Use filtered or rainwater if possible, as caladiums can be sensitive to chemicals in tap water. Ensure water is at room temperature.
Pruning
Caladium bicolor doesn't require much pruning. Simply remove dead or damaged leaves. If you want the plant to grow more compactly, you can pinch the growing tips, but this isn't necessary. During winter dormancy, the plant will naturally drop its leaves.
Maintenance Calendar
February to April: Plant begins coming out of dormancy. Start watering carefully. May to September: Peak growing season. Water regularly, fertilize weekly with dilute solution. Maintain high humidity. October to December: Plant withdraws. Water less frequently. Leaves will yellow and drop. January to March: Dormancy period. Minimal watering. Store tubers dry and cool.
Winter Hardiness
Caladium bicolor is absolutely not winter hardy and cannot grow outdoors in temperate climates. This is a tropical plant that must be kept indoors year-round in cooler regions. In areas where temperatures stay above 15 degrees Celsius in winter, you can keep the plant outside, but it will still need a dormancy period.
In winter, the plant becomes dormant and drops its leaves. This is completely normal. Store the tubers dry and cool (around 13-18 degrees Celsius) until you want to replant them in April.
Companion Plants
Caladium bicolor grows well alongside other tropical foliage plants like Anthuriums, Calathea's, and Monsteras. These plants share the same requirements for temperature, humidity, and light. You can group them in a humidity case or terrarium for optimal growth.
Less suitable companions are cacti and succulents, which need far less water and humidity.
Closing
Caladium bicolor is a spectacular plant for those who can provide proper tropical care. The striking foliage makes it worth the effort. Start with a good location with indirect light, maintain humidity, and fertilize regularly during the growing season. With patience and proper care, your plant will reward you with a stunning display of colorful leaves.
