Overview

Asplenium platyneuron, better known as the Ebony spleenwort or ebony-stemmed spleenwort, is a native North American fern from the Aspleniaceae family. This species grows naturally in eastern North America, from Canada through the southern United States, thriving on moist rocks, small crevices, and forest floors.

The plant earns its English name "Ebony" from the shiny, dark-brown to black frond stems (stipes). This plant is perfect for gardeners seeking native plants for shaded, rocky gardens with moist conditions.

Appearance and growth

Asplenium platyneuron is a small, evergreen fern typically reaching 15 to 45 centimeters in height. The fronds are linear and grow 10 to 25 centimeters long and 1 to 2 centimeters wide.

The most striking feature is the ebony-black to dark-brown frond stems (stipes), which strongly contrast with the bright green of the leaflets. This gives the plant a very elegant, almost architectural appearance.

The fronds are pinnately compound (feather-like), with 10 to 30 pairs of smaller leaflets along the central midrib. These small leaflets are rounded to oblong in shape.

Ideal location

Asplenium platyneuron grows naturally in moist locations beneath trees and in forest environments with filtered light. This fern requires: shade to partial shade, minimum 3-4 hours indirect daylight.

Avoid direct sunlight, which can cause fronds to yellow. A location beneath shrubs, against the shaded side of buildings, or in groupings with other shade-loving plants is ideal.

Soil type

Asplenium platyneuron grows naturally on moist, highly acidic soils. In gardens, compose a growing medium containing substantial organic matter, such as decomposed leaf mold or composted leaf material.

Add sand and small stones to improve drainage, but ensure the medium remains moist. The ideal pH is acidic (pH 5.5-6.5).

Watering

This fern requires regularly moist growing conditions, similar to its natural moist forest habitat. Water regularly, 2-3 times weekly, depending on season and weather conditions.

Never allow it to dry completely, but ensure the medium does not become waterlogged, which can cause root rot.

Soft water (rainwater) is better than hard tap water with high lime content.

Maintenance and pruning

Asplenium platyneuron requires minimal pruning. Regularly remove dead fronds and withered leaflets.

Aging fronds naturally replace with new growth. This is normal and not a sign of disease.

Maintenance calendar

January-February: Minimal maintenance, moderate watering.

March-April: Beginning of growth, regular watering, light feeding.

May-June: Full growth, consistent watering, regular feeding.

July-September: Growth continues, maintain moisture.

October-November: Growth slows, reduce watering.

December: Winter time, minimal maintenance.

Winter hardiness

Asplenium platyneuron is fully hardy in the regions where it naturally grows (USDA hardiness zones 4-9, equivalent to much of Europe). The plant can tolerate frost and grows best in areas with cold winters.

Ice and snow can damage the delicate fronds, but the plant will recover in spring.

Companion plants

Asplenium platyneuron combines well with:

  • Other native ferns (Polystichum, Dryopteris species)
  • Waldsteinia species
  • Shade-loving ground covers
  • Hostas and hellebores

Closing

Asplenium platyneuron is an excellent choice for gardeners seeking a native fern for shaded gardens. With its characteristic ebony stems and moisture-loving nature, this plant fits perfectly in woodland and rock gardens. Grow this beautiful fern and enjoy its elegant appearance.
