Overview
Armeria arenaria, commonly known as Jersey thrift or plantain thrift, is a compact alpine plant from the Plumbaginaceae family. This European mountain species offers low-maintenance cultivation with bright rosy pompom flowers. Perfect for rock walls, alpine borders, and dry rock gardens.
Appearance & bloom
Armeria arenaria forms dense, hemispherical rosettes of narrow, linear green foliage. From May to September, elegant round pompom flowers appear in fuchsia to soft pink on slender stems. Height reaches only 15-30 cm.
Ideal location
Choose very sunny locations with excellent drainage. This plant prefers windswept alpine terrain and rocky slopes. In gardens, perfect for raised borders and rock gardens.
Soil
Armeria arenaria prefers very well-drained, lean soil. Sandy to gravelly earth is ideal. No supplementary feeding needed, as the plant accepts the poorest conditions. pH 6.5-8.0.
Watering
Once established, Armeria arenaria is highly drought-resistant. Minimal watering beyond establishment needed. Excess water leads to root rot.
Pruning
Removing spent flowerheads encourages continuous blooming. After flowering, light pruning can be applied. Heavy pruning not tolerated.
Maintenance calendar
February: check drainage. March-April: growth season begins. May-September: blooming period. October: plant slows growth. November-January: winter rest.
Winter hardiness
Armeria arenaria is fully hardy to -15 degrees Celsius. Thrives even in very cold and windy mountain areas.
Companion plants
Pair with other alpine species: Saxifraga, Sempervivum, Sedums, Dianthus. Also lovely with alpine grasses like Festuca ovina.
Closing
Armeria arenaria is essential for alpine and rock gardens. It provides year-round reliable rosy flowers with minimal care. Find it at quality nurseries. Visit gardenworld.app/en and gardenworld.app/nl.
