Overview

Araucaria araucana, commonly called Monkey puzzle or Chilean pine, is a spectacular conifer native to the mountain forests of southern Chile and Argentina. This architecturally striking tree is renowned for its geometrically perfect growth pattern and densely scaled foliage. It is a conversation-starting specimen for gardens seeking distinctive structure.

Appearance and Bloom

Monkey puzzle grows as a stiffly upright, columnar tree reaching 15-20 meters tall in ideal conditions. The bark is grayish-brown, thick, and deeply furrowed. The foliage is extremely distinctive: stiff, triangular to linear leaves densely overlap along branches in perfect spirals, creating a uniquely textured appearance. Male cones are small and yellowish, female cones much larger (to 15 cm) and contain nutritious seeds edible to wildlife.

Ideal Location

This tree thrives in full sun to light shade in sheltered locations. It dislikes windswept sites as strong winds can damage the dense branch structure. A central or semi-central garden position is ideal.

Soil

Araucaria araucana is not particularly fussy about soil quality provided drainage is excellent. It grows in sandy to clayey soils. Slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0-7.0) is preferred. Good drainage prevents root rot.

Watering

Once established, Monkey puzzle is relatively drought-tolerant with deep root systems. Water regularly during the first two years for strong establishment. Mature specimens require minimal water except during severe drought.

Pruning

Minimal pruning needed. Remove only dead branches or awkwardly crossing growth. The natural pyramidal form is perfection itself.

Maintenance Calendar

Spring: Plant young trees in full sun locations. Summer: Regular watering during dry periods. Autumn: Mulch around the base for winter protection. Winter: Shield young trees from harsh cold winds.

Winter Hardiness

Araucaria araucana is well-hardy to zones 6-7. Mature trees tolerate temperatures to -15°C. Young specimens may need protection during their first few winters.

Companion Plants

Pair with other architecturally interesting conifers. Maintain low-growing groundcovers around the base. Avoid competition from vigorous-growing plants.
