Overview
Undulate Alkanet (Anchusa undulata) is a stunning Mediterranean plant from the Boraginaceae family, native to the Iberian Peninsula, Balearic Islands, and northwestern Greece. This herbaceous annual to short-lived perennial is prized for its vibrant blue and purple flowers that bloom generously throughout late spring and summer.
It thrives in dry, sunny conditions and requires minimal water once established, making it ideal for water-conscious gardeners. This classic Mediterranean choice brings authentic colour to drought gardens and natural landscapes, needing little more than sun and well-draining soil.
Appearance and bloom
Undulate Alkanet typically reaches 30-60 cm in height, forming loose, open clumps. Its leaves are long, narrow, and distinctly wavy at the edges, which gives the plant its common name. The flowers arrive in May, June and July, displaying brilliant blues and purples.
Each tiny flower (roughly 1-1.5 cm across) has five petals that spread outward. They grow in tight clusters along the stems, attracting bees and other pollinators freely. The dark stems provide attractive contrast against the lighter foliage, adding visual interest even between blooms.
Ideal location
This plant loves sunshine. Choose a spot with at least 8 hours of direct sun daily. Partial shade can work in very hot climates (USDA zones 9-10), but in temperate regions (zones 5-8), full sun is essential for robust flowering.
It tolerates strong wind well and performs brilliantly on exposed, open sites. Equally at home in rock gardens, along pergolas, or on dry slopes where fussier plants struggle, it is genuinely adaptable to challenging locations.
Soil
Undulate Alkanet prefers well-draining soil with neutral to slightly alkaline pH (7.0-7.5). It thrives in poor, sandy and rocky soil, making it excellent for difficult spots where other plants falter.
Waterlogging is the chief enemy. If your soil is heavy clay, work in sand and gravel, or plant in a raised bed. The plant also tolerates saline soils, so it suits coastal gardens admirably.
Watering
Once established (after about two years), water requirements are minimal. During the growing season, water only during prolonged dry spells or if leaves show wilting signs. Between waterings, let the soil dry out somewhat.
In the first year after planting, water regularly (every 2-3 weeks) to help the root system settle. Taper back after the first season. Reduce watering significantly in autumn as growth slows. Rain usually covers its needs thereafter.
Pruning
Pruning is not essential, but deadheading spent flowers (late July) keeps the plant tidy and can trigger a second flush of bloom. Remove old seed heads if you prefer to prevent self-seeding.
At season's end (October-November), cut the plant back to about 15-20 cm in temperate zones. In warmer regions, leave it larger and tidy up only dead material.
Maintenance calendar
March-April: Check for winter damage and apply light balanced fertiliser. May-July: Monitor water needs, deadhead after flowering. August-October: Let it grow, minimal intervention. November-February: Provide winter cover in cold zones, minimal care.
Winter hardiness
Undulate Alkanet is reasonably hardy, surviving temperatures down to about -10 to -12 degrees Celsius (USDA zones 7-8). In colder regions (zones 5-6), winter protection is needed. Apply a thick mulch in December or drape with horticultural fleece.
In zones 9-10, it grows year-round without protection. In very cold zones, grow it in containers indoors over winter.
Companion plants
Undulate Alkanet pairs beautifully with other Mediterranean natives: lavender, sage, thyme and cistus. It also works well with other dry-site dwellers such as sedums, sempervivums and Verbascum species.
Avoid pairing with moisture-lovers like hydrangeas, which require very different watering schedules.
Closing
Undulate Alkanet is a reliable, colourful choice for dry, sunny spots. With minimal care, it blooms reliably year after year. Source plants from local nurseries specialising in Mediterranean species. For more Mediterranean garden tips, visit gardenworld.app. Happy growing!
