Overview
Alternanthera philoxeroides, commonly called alligator-weed, is a fast-growing aquatic plant native to South America. This compact plant is popular in aquariums and ponds for both its growth characteristics and interesting leaf structure. The plant is renowned for its ability to grow rapidly and adapt to many conditions.
While this plant can be invasive in many warm regions, it offers great value in controlled garden settings as a decorative aquatic plant. Belonging to the Amaranthaceae family, it grows via stolons (horizontal stems at or just below the water surface).
Appearance and growth pattern
Alternanthera philoxeroides grows as a mat-forming plant reaching only 5-10 cm above water but capable of spreading horizontally indefinitely. Stems are pale to bright green with a fibrous texture. Leaves are small, lance-shaped to oval, usually 1-3 cm long.
Flowers are small and inconspicuous, white or light green, not particularly the highlight of this plant. The real attraction lies in the dense, compact growth pattern and bright green color, especially under good lighting conditions.
The plant grows fastest in warm conditions and can achieve 5-10 cm per week growth under optimal circumstances.
Ideal location
Alternanthera philoxeroides grows best in full sun to partial shade. Provide at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight daily. In good light the plant becomes more compact and dense. In shade it grows taller and lankier.
The plant can be cultivated in both aquariums and outdoor ponds. In aquariums position against back or side walls; in ponds along edges or in shallow zones.
Water and substrate requirements
Alternanthera philoxeroides grows virtually anywhere water exists - aquariums, ponds, canals. The plant tolerates vast water quality variations: temperature 15-28°C, pH 5.5-8.5, hardness highly variable.
In aquariums be careful with substrate - nutrition is less important than for many aquatic plants. A thin layer of aquarium sand or gravel suffices. For faster growth add nutrition via tablets or liquid fertilizer.
In ponds the plant grows in virtually any soil type.
Water quality
This plant is extremely tolerant of water quality. It functions well in both clean aquarium water and rougher pond water. CO2 injection in aquariums aids denser growth, but is unnecessary.
Regular water changes in aquariums support healthy growth.
Pruning and shaping
Alternanthera philoxeroides responds very well to regular trimming. Cut the top centimeter of stems to encourage more compact, dense growth. Trimmed pieces root quickly on substrate or in sand and form new plants rapidly.
Trimming can be done weekly in aquariums, less frequently in fall-winter.
Maintenance calendar
Spring/Summer: Fast growth period. Weekly trimming recommended. Regular feeding with aquaplant fertilizer. Monitor water quality.
Fall: Growth slows as temperature drops. Trim less frequently. Gradually reduce feeding.
Winter: Very slow growth. Minimal trimming needed. Temperature ideally 18-20°C in aquariums.
Propagation
Alternanthera philoxeroides is extremely easy to propagate. Simply cut sections and plant in substrate. These root quickly and form new shoots within weeks.
In aquariums, cut sections can also be left floating until roots develop.
Winter hardiness
Alternanthera philoxeroides is not winter-hardy in temperate climates. In outdoor ponds the plant dies if temperatures drop below 5°C. In warm regions (zone 9+) the plant can overwinter.
In temperate climates start new plants in spring from seed or cuttings from preserved overwintered plants.
Management as invasive plant
In some countries/regions Alternanthera philoxeroides is listed as an invasive plant in wild waters. Ensure plant material never enters natural water bodies. Compost trimmed material.
Companion plants in aquariums
Alternanthera philoxeroides works well with:
- Other stem plants (Ludwigia, Cabomba)
- Ground covers (Glossostigma, Eleocharis)
- Foreground plants
- Midground accent plants
Benefits in aquariums
- Fast-growing, helps remove nutrients from water column
- Provides shelter for young fish
- Beautiful contrast in aquascapes
- Very easy to maintain
Closing
Alternanthera philoxeroides is an invaluable plant for aquarists and pond gardeners. With its rapid growth, tolerance of conditions, and ease of propagation, it's a perfect beginner plant. The bright green color and dense growth add value to any aquascape.
