The low-maintenance gravel garden: your garden does itself

A gravel garden is your front yard that almost runs itself. Gravel as mulch, drought-tolerant plants, no lawn - no weekly grass mowing. You need 1-2x per month maintenance instead of weekly work.

Why gravel? Gravel drains quickly, keeps roots warm in summer, cools in summer, releases water slowly. No compost-mulch rot or fungus. Gravel stays intact for years.

Drought-tolerant plants grow on poor soil, love full sun, hate overwatering. Once established they need little.

The result: beautiful front yard, minimal maintenance, low water use.

Choosing drought-tolerant plants

Ideal drought-tolerant plants:

  • Sedum species (red, purple, green varieties), hardy plants
  • Echinops (globe thistle), Eryngium (sea holly)
  • Festuca glauca (blue fescue), Stipa (feather grass)
  • Lavender (all species), Rosemary, Sage
  • Stonecrop (Sedum acre), Dianthus (pink)
  • Alchemilla mollis (lady's mantle, yellow flower)
  • Santolina (cotton lavender)

Not: primula, hosta, violet (want moisture). Not: rhododendron, azalea (want acid). Those grow poorly in gravel gardens.

For low maintenance: repeat 3-5 plant species many times. Not 20 different. Repetition looks calmer too.

Soil: poorer is better

Gravel gardens grow on poor soil. So: DO NOT add lots of compost.

Preparation:

  • Remove existing foot of soil (15-20 cm)
  • Add mix: 50% rough sand, 30% coarse gravel, 20% clay-lean garden soil
  • No compost!

This feels poor. Perfect. Drought-tolerant plants get lazy on rich soil.

Actually: the poorer the soil, the better these plants grow and the less you have to give.

Layout: height variation with gravel

Gravel garden looks best with subtle height variation. Not flat.

Front (0-30 cm): lavender, pink (Dianthus), Sedum low (red, purple) Middle (30-60 cm): globe thistle (Echinops), feather grass (Stipa), rosemary Back (60-90 cm): sage, compact shrub (no tree)

Gravel between everything: 5-7 cm layer. This is not "decoration", it is maintenance-remover. Gravel suppresses weeds and keeps water-level stable.

Timing: growth in first two years

Gravel garden grows slowly. Year 1 feels small.

Schedule:

  • March: plant drought-tolerant species. Lots of water first 6 weeks (establishment)
  • May-June: lots of sun, less water
  • July-September: almost no water (only extreme drought)
  • October: autumn-rest, no water

After two years mature. This is not wrong - it is much better than overwatering.

Step-by-step

Step 1: Choose drought-tolerant plants

Make list: lavender, pink (Dianthus), globe thistle, Sedum, feather grass. Ask local nursery what grows well in your area on dry ground.

Step 2: Soil preparation

Remove existing soil (15-20 cm). Add mix: 50% sand, 30% gravel, 20% poor garden soil. Do not add compost!

Step 3: Plant in clusters

Plant 3-5 of same species together. Lavender in 1 group, pink in other group. This looks intentional and calmer.

Step 4: Add gravel

Spread clean gravel (5-7 cm layer) between all plants. This suppresses weeds very effectively and loses water slower.

Step 5: Water carefully first 6 weeks

First 6 weeks lots of water (daily in drought). After 6 weeks back to minimal water. Once established these plants need little.

Maintenance: almost nothing

Gravel garden is almost maintenance-free.

Pruning: lavender after bloom lightly prune back (May). Sage/Rosemary in March lightly. Sedum do not prune.

Weeds: gravel suppresses most. Occasionally pull rough weeds (not much).

Water: after first season almost not. Only extreme drought (no rain 4+ weeks) give water. Overwatering is death - do not do it.

Fertilizer: no. These plants grow on poor soil. Fertilizer makes them lazy and larger than wanted.

Gravel refill: every 2-3 years refill gravel (washout). Not much work.

Frequently asked questions

Does not a gravel garden look bare?

No. With the right plants lots of texture. Globe thistle spikes upward, feather grass moves in wind, Sedum red/purple color, lavender purple flowers. Much more interesting than you think.

Can I add something green?

Carefully. Lady's mantle (Alchemilla mollis) green plus yellow flower, grows well in gravel garden. Small bit green can work. Large dark-green shrub no - breaks the calm theme.

Do I really water so little?

Yes. Drought-tolerant plants in gravel want to grow dry. Overwatering rots them off. First 6 weeks lots, then minimal. That is all. This is counter-intuitive but true.

Is not gravel hot/bad for roots?

No, opposite. Gravel insulates roots, keeps them cool in summer. Gravel carries heat out better than dark compost. Roots are happy.

On gardenworld.app can I see gravel garden?

Yes. Upload front yard and see how gravel garden design looks in your space. Drought-tolerant plants, gravel, height variation - all visible. Visualize first, plant then on gardenworld.app.

Which drought-tolerant plant grows fastest?

Lavender (year 1-2 fast, then stable), Alchemilla mollis (quick grower). For quick coverage, lavender plus Sedum at same time.

Do I really save water?

Yes, enormously. Gravel garden uses 60-70% less water than traditional lawn plus flower. In summer months almost no water after establishment. This is not ecological talk - it is scientific fact.

Closing

Low-maintenance gravel garden is not wrong design, it is smart. Less work, more enjoyment, less water. On gardenworld.app you visualize your gravel garden and see drought-tolerant plants grow. Rest in your garden.
