TL;DR: Bokashi for your garden

Bokashi is the fastest (and least smelly) way to turn kitchen waste into plant food. You ferment things that normal compost hates: meat, fish, cheese, bones, diseased plant parts. In 2-3 weeks you have brown, sweet bokashi that you bury in your garden. Costs about 30 pounds per bucket, but you save two years of compost waiting and get free soil amendment. Perfect if you have a small yard or live in a flat.

Why bokashi beats regular compost

Normal compost must heat up (55+ degrees) to neutralize bones, meat, and disease spores. This takes months. Bokashi does it differently: you pack everything into a sealed bucket with EM powder (effective microbes). Without oxygen, kitchen scraps ferment and become food for your soil. No smell (bokashi smells sweet, almost apple-like), no flies, no waiting.

Regular compost: terrified of meat, fish, and diseased parts. Bokashi: no problem, throw it all in. That cuts trash trips to the bin by half. In winter, when compost piles freeze solid, you can still use bokashi.

Advantage two: bokashi works fast. In 2-3 weeks of fermentation it is ready. You bury it in your garden and bacteria break it into plant food right where you grow. Your vegetable beds get nutrition directly where they need it, not after months of compost waiting.

What you need

A bokashi bucket (about 20-30 liters, seals airtight). Costs 30-50 pounds, online or garden center. Many brands: Bokashi Organko, Lomi, or generic versions. Important: airtight lid and spigot at bottom (to harvest bokashi liquid).

EM powder (effective microorganisms). This is bokashi's engine - it contains bacteria that drive fermentation. About 10 pounds per bag (lasts months). Without EM it just rots in the bucket.

A spoon (does not need to be fancy). Handy for sprinkling EM powder.

Step-by-step bokashi making

Step 1: Preparation

Place your bokashi bucket in the kitchen (under sink, in a cupboard, or corner). Make sure it seals airtight. Check the spigot works.

Step 2: First layer

Chop all your kitchen scraps small. The smaller, the faster fermentation. Banana peels, meat chunks, fish bones, coffee filters, teabags (no plastic), breadcrumbs, cheese, everything goes in. Pour into bucket (about 10 cm deep).

Step 3: Sprinkle EM powder

Sprinkle a thin layer of EM powder over your scraps. Not much needed - about 1 teaspoon per layer. The powder seeds microbes that start fermentation.

Step 4: Seal lid

Close the lid tight. This matters - bokashi needs no oxygen (anaerobic process). An open bucket just rots with smell.

Step 5: Repeat

Next day add more scraps. Make the same layer (scraps, EM powder, seal). Do this for 10-14 days until bucket is full.

Step 6: Harvest bokashi liquid

Through the spigot at bottom, bokashi liquid drips out. This is potent plant food - dilute 1:10 with water and feed your vegetables. Harvest every 3-4 days so bucket does not overflow.

Step 7: Let it ferment

When bucket is full, seal it completely and let it ferment 2-3 more weeks. During this time everything shrinks smaller and turns dark brown. You see white mold network (this is good, working microbes).

Step 8: Bury in your garden

After fermentation you have brown, sweet bokashi. Dig it into your vegetable beds, under plants, or garden corners. Work it about 10 cm deep. In 2-4 weeks soil bacteria break it into plant nutrition.

Frequently asked questions

Does bokashi smell bad?

No. Bokashi smells sweet, almost apple-like. This is because anaerobic fermentation has no gas breakdown. An open compost pile smells far worse. If your bokashi stinks, you probably did not seal well or used too little EM powder.

Can flies get in my bokashi bucket?

No. As long as your lid seals airtight. This is the main advantage - no flies, no midges.

How long does one EM powder bag last?

One bag lasts months to a year for average household. Depends on how often you fill your bokashi. Order a new bag before your current one runs out.

Can I put diseased plant parts in bokashi?

Yes, bokashi handles everything. Disease spores die in the acids of fermentation. This is huge advantage over normal compost, where you must avoid diseases.

What to use bokashi liquid for

Bokashi liquid (diluted 1:10) is potent plant food. Give it to vegetables, flowers, trees - anything growing. Especially good for heavy feeders like cucumbers, tomatoes, and cabbage. Once weekly feeding in growing season is plenty.

Why bokashi beats normal compost pile

A normal compost pile is big, rough, takes months. You must turn it regularly (heavy work), flies love it, and smell can be annoying. Bokashi by contrast is small and tidy. Two buckets (one active, one fermenting) is all you need.

Secondary bonus: bokashi bucket can sit indoors (kitchen cupboard, balcony corner). No need for big compost pile in garden. Perfect for urban gardening or small yards.

Apply bokashi nutrition

Once your bokashi is ready (after 2-3 weeks fermentation), you dig it into your vegetable beds. This gives nutrition right where you grow. Tomatoes, cucumbers, courgettes - they all do better on bokashi feed. Fermentation processes continue in soil, so nutrition gets even better over time.

Integrate bokashi into your garden plan

At gardenworld.app you can visualize your vegetable beds and plan where your bokashi nutrition works best. See where you need water tanks and compost stations, plan your bokashi spots, and design a sustainable system that lasts years. Bokashi is perfect start for self-sufficient gardening.

Many gardeners think composting is hard. Bokashi makes it simple: everything goes in, zero maintenance, zero smell. Small space? Bokashi fits anywhere. Have meat scraps? Bokashi handles it fine. This is why bokashi grows more popular for urban gardeners. Combine bokashi with worm bin and normal compost and you have complete soil-feeding system.
