Why is soil preparation crucial for a new lawn?

Many gardeners think lawn seeding is simple: sow, water, done. But this is where small errors have huge consequences. Poorly prepared soil leads to thin, weedy, patchy grass - a lawn you feel letdown about.

A good lawn begins months before you sow the first seed. It begins in the soil. Grass roots are underground workers. They need loose, crumbly, nutrient-rich soil to root deeply. They also need drainage - grass hates wet feet. And they need even subsoil so your mower does not bounce.

This guide covers complete preparation. No shortcuts, just solid work that costs extra effort at the start and pays dividends for years.

Step 1: Remove existing vegetation

Many gardens have weeds, moss, or old turf. Start clean.

For thin weeds and moss, regular mower set low works. Make several passes. This clears much.

For thick existing turf, you have options:

  • Sod cutter rental: hires machine from local rental shop, cuts sod and rolls it. Thorough but time-consuming.
  • Herbicide: spray non-selective herbicide, wait 10-14 days, then dig over. Works but many avoid chemicals.
  • Manual: spade out thick roots. Labour-heavy but doable for small plots.

Whatever method, goal is: blank, root-free, clean soil.

Step 2: Soil analysis - know your soil

Before you add anything, understand what you have. A simple soil test costs little and saves mistakes.

Many local authorities offer soil tests. Send a sample to a lab, get pH, nutrients (N, P, K), and advice. Usually 20-30 euro.

What to know:

  • pH: grass prefers 6-7 (slightly acidic to neutral). If pH 5 (very acidic), add lime. pH 8 (alkaline) is rare but needs sulphate.
  • Nutrients: old gardens often lack nutrition. N (nitrogen) gives leaf growth, P (phosphorus) gives roots, K (potassium) gives strength. For grass, focus mainly on N.
  • Structure: heavy clay or light sand? This determines drainage. Sand drains too fast, clay drains poorly.

Step 3: Loosen and add amendments

Now you know your soil, work it.

For clay soil (heavy, poor drainage):

  1. Spade 20-30 cm deep. Breaks compaction.
  2. Add mature compost (5-10 cm) and work it in.
  3. Add sand too (10% by volume) for better drainage.
  4. Rake everything smooth.

For sandy soil (light, dry):

  1. Spade loose to 20 cm.
  2. Add more compost (10-15 cm) for water retention.
  3. Work in well.

For normal soil (good balance):

  1. Spade 20 cm deep loose.
  2. Add 5 cm mature compost.
  3. Work in and rake smooth.

Nutrients: Add slow-release lawn fertiliser (NPK 10-5-10 or similar) per package instructions. This gives grass a good start.

Step 4: Firm and level

After all the digging, you have loose, soft soil. This needs a foottest - not too loose, not too hard.

Walk gently over it, distributing your weight. Soil feels firm but not hard. This is the ideal point.

Rake next all unevenness smooth. No holes, no bumps. A level base is essential for even seeding later. A bumpy base gives patchy grass later.

Step 5: Drainage test

Dig two 30 cm deep holes. Fill with water. Wait 24 hours.

  • Water drains away: drainage is good.
  • Water remains: drainage is poor. You need more sand and compost, or a drain system (complex).

If drainage is poor, repeat step 3 with more sand and compost. Worth the effort for healthy grass.

Step 6: Rest period

After all preparation, let soil rest 2-3 weeks. This lets young roots and bacteria establish. Do not walk on it.

During this time you will see many weed seeds germinate. Normal. Rake them off, or leave until seeding.

Step-by-step

Step 1: Remove old vegetation

Use sod cutter, herbicide, or spade to remove all old grass, sod, and weeds. Goal: blank soil with no old roots.

Step 2: Analyse your soil

Take a soil sample and send to local authority or private lab. Determine pH and nutrients.

Step 3: Loosen and amend

Spade 20-30 cm deep loose. Add 5-10 cm compost. For clay add sand. Work everything in.

Step 4: Firm gently

Walk gently over it. Ensure firm but not hard.

Step 5: Make level

Rake all holes and bumps smooth. Goal: even, level base.

Step 6: Drainage test

Dig two 30 cm holes, fill with water, wait 24 hours. Check drainage.

Frequently asked questions

How much compost should I add?

5-10 cm, depending on current soil. Clay gets more, normal gets less. Better too much than too little.

Can I just sow on old soil?

No, unless it was already good lawn. Old soil is usually compacted and nutrient-poor. You get thin grass.

What fertiliser should I use?

Slow-release lawn fertiliser, NPK 10-5-10 or higher nitrogen. Quick fertiliser burns grass. Buy slow-release or coated granules.

What if my pH is very low?

Add lime. Amount depends on current pH. Your lab advises. Usually 1-2 kg per 10 m2.

Can I seed in autumn or only spring?

Both spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) work. Autumn sometimes better due to less evaporation.

How long does complete preparation take?

3-4 months including rest period. Cannot rush without losing quality.

Frequently asked questions

What if I skip soil preparation?

You get thin, uneven grass with lots of weeds. Much repair work needed later.

Can I do everything on the same day?

No. The 2-3 week rest period is essential for bacteria and roots.

What if I skip soil analysis?

You risk under-fed soil or wrong pH. Save on analysis and spend more on extra fertiliser.
